Dilemma. Fairly urgent. Should I act now?

I'm here with my three ds's and someone else's 2 ds's. I really don't want to have to take them all to the doctors now but ...

ds4 (who's 2.5) is crying when he wees atm. He says he has a sore 'lilly' and it does look a little swollen. Hardly surprising as he has a habit of rubbing his dinner in it.

The other boys (7, 6, 5 and 4) are blissfully playing, two on the trampoline and two making peanut butter with the pestle and mortar.

I really don't want to have to take ds4 to the doctor and drag all these boys with me.

There's no-one who could pop in btw and it's pretty much now or never (well, Monday anyway).

What would you do?

When will the extras be going home? Can the parent of them watch you others for you?

Report
ladymac · 10/08/2007 16:21

These things always happen late on a friday, don't they?

I would go just to be on the safe side. You don't want it to get worse on the weekend.

Just bribe them with sweets to be good at the dr's!

Who owns the other two boys? When will s/he be coming to retrieve them?

your local hospital may have a gp unit open at the weekends - what is your doc's out of hours service like?
try phoning gp and see if you can bag late apppointment, and they should also know about out of hours service at hospital.

if the above yields nowt, head for gp now.

poor ds and sore lilly

Do you havwe a decent out-of-hours service where you are? We do, and in your situation I would call as soon as the gp surgery closed, and take the LO onvce the other children have gone home or there is someone else around tolook after them.

I'd go because it is SUCH a royal PITA to get an appointment at the weekend.

He's giving his 'lilly' a good ol' tug as I write so it can't be that sore. I guess it could be a urinary tracrt infection. Do they go away on their own or do they need ABs?

I'd get him to the docs. Could be ballinitis or water infection and he might need antibiotics. Might get worse over weekend. A weekend with a crying 2.5 year old would be worse in my opinion than lugging all those boys to the docs (am impressed you are looking after so many boys - I only have three and that's hard work!). Rubbing dinner in it - hope he grows out of that one ...

Why dont you call NHSdirect and see if they have any general advice to reduce symptoms and see how it is tomorrow. They will tell you what to do over the weekend if it worsens. It will be too late to go to Drs now.

ok don't quote me on this but here is what you do..... wait until other boys gone home or your dh is home, presuming htis is after 18:30 ( the time your own gp stops ) then call the out of hours gp service in your area, inevitably they will ask you when it all started and say you where out all day and the nany/au pair, dh or whoever you can think up only told you after you got home and of course by hten your own doctor was shut.....it sound slike your little one has balnitis - an infection under the foreskin, not life threatening but very painful and most likely will need antibiotics, where inthe country are you?

Report
Mercy · 10/08/2007 16:26

yes, mainly because the last thing you want is him in pain late at night or in the middle of the night and then you're really stuck (unless dh will be around to help)

How about phoning NHS DIrect first?

Sit him in a bowl of warm water within half a cupful of baking soda dissolved in it. Very soothing on female bits, so may help. Let him play with himself sao that the water gets inside, but don't let him put the water in his mouth.

Phone the surgery now, explain your situation and ask them if they can see you after 5.45pm. You don't know until you try.

Good advice maureen.
Interesting advice PC. I wonder. I did consider tea tree, but I feel less able to guess with male parts than female iykwim.

DS1 had a bit swollen willy this time last year. I waited till dp got home as I was post sect with ds2 so couldn't have got to the docs anyway.
When dp opened the nappy it was like a big purple plum there, we rang out of hours, they gave us an appt for the gp unit at our hospital straight away, it was an infection under the foreskin, he had antibiotic pills and cream.
DP said only a woman (me) could 'wait and see' for something wrong with a willy!
You do need to get it seen to, asap. DS1 couldn't wee properly for a couple of days as it swelled so much between me noticing it and dp coming home.
