Peeing after catheter?

DH has an op yesterday to remove a tumour from his kidney and had to have a catheter for the first 24 hours. He had it removed this morning but now can't pee. He has tried everything but it's just not working. They scanned his bladder and it was quite full and because he couldn't empty it they had to drain it. He is now told that if he can't go then will have to have the catheter put back in and I will stay in situ for 4 days and then try removing it again which he absolutely does not want .

He has tried having a shower, running water, relaxation exercises the lot.

Anyone experience this? Advice?
TIA

It’s quite common post op (particularly if he had a spinal/epidural too) & doesn’t mean he’ll need a long term catheter or that it’ll be a problem again. It’s really important that he isn’t in retention (unable to pee) for too long now so his remaining kidney stays happy. Hope it’s sorted soon.

I definaltly found it very hard to pee after getting mine removed post c section. I just had to sit on the toilet for a ridiculously long time until it happened. I know that doesn't help much, but I do think it's quite normal.

Maybe he's working himself up and stressing about it too much?

I had a catheter post epidural during birth and I couldn't pee after as I felt pressure to do so as was under a strict time limit but had no one to help me to the toilet!!!! They put it back in for 24 hours for me to then try again and had no problem. Midwife was very encouraging and just said go to the loo with your phone and take your time. They said it is quite common that after having a catheter it just takes some people's bladder muscles longer to wake up than others.

Yeah he is definitely working himself up. He only had a partial nephrectomy so still has one full kidney and another working at about 80%.

He just can't relax and the more he stresses the harder it becomes.

I had a similar thing a few years ago after an op. They put the catheter back in for 24h and when they removed it the second time it was fine. Just have a lazy bladder apparently! It's hard not to get really worked up about it at the time so I sympathise, lots of rest and try to relax when he does go, reading or playing a game on a phone may also help as a pp has suggested.

Did he have a general anaesthetic ...I presume so?
I can NOT pee after a general. It takes a good 24 hours before I can pee again... it's horrible. My bladder refuses to relax..I can be desperate but can't go. Always end up being catheterised even if I wasn't for the op!

My DD1 is the same. I bet he will find he can go tomorrow.

Nurse here, incredibly common so try not to worry. Really not unusual to recatheterise for a short time and usually things are fine when it is removed again.
