Low Folic Acid Supplements

Doctor has just told me that I am low on folic acid. She has prescribed me 5mg per day for 3 months.

It's going to be tricky getting to the surgery to pick up prescription before closing time. This may be a silly question, but I know they can be bought over the counter so should I just go buy some? Will there be a difference in what I'd be buying and what the doc has prescribed?

I may be wrong but the last time I checked it wasn't possible to buy 5mg Folic Acid without prescription. Only 2.5mg without prescription- so you could take double dose to make up 5mg. It would be the same medication, regardless of you buying it with or without prescription. If all fails, you could always try and eat food rich in folic acid and wait until you can pick up the prescription.

You will be fine till Monday surely? Then you can pick it up or get it delivered to your pharmacy.

I wouldn't have thought it's so urgent that you need to pick them up today. Would you be able to get it on Monday?

FWIW, 3 months on 5mg for me was a game changer. I hope you feel better soon too.

Thanks! It's not that I needed them urgently, it's just that I'd need to leave work an hour early (don't drive) to make sure I'm there before closing. I've rang to see if they can send it to the pharmacy.... I'm on my 30th try since this AM!!

Are memory problems a symptom? I have a terrible short term memory. I'll forget to do something and I'll remember a few hours later .... or as the case may be at the minute, the next morning doing the ironing.

Did you get your B12 checked out ? That can cause memory problems if you are low .

Yes, I asked if I should be taking a Foluc acid & B12 supplement and was told my B12 was fine.
