For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

I got bored of all the healthy thread titles

Have had apple, raisins, nectarines (2), half a banana. All the kiwis are fine on the outside and rotten on the inside [grump]

you utter temptress, I thought this would be a counter-point to your lentilweaverish ways and over-egging of the healthy.
I've got your grump now.

do you know, the bananas here are not nice
I miss the ones from the Windward Islands. These ones are very starchy yet not quite plantains. A cruel trick.

I have a mangosteen on the table but itmay be too beautiful to ravage.

Has it got sugar in? Has it got nuts in? Ds and I have an agreement that he is going to eat breakfast without pissing around, if I can find him a, and I quote, "nice cereal that is like that farm muesli (Dorset cereal's extortionate stuff) with no sugar and no nuts in"

it has sugar in..which i wouldn't have had but somehow i missed it and now it has become a habit but i dilute it ocnsiderably with plain oats

they almost all have sugar in

and are all ridiculously expensive but i am pampering myself

hang on a minutespending money recklessly, inappropriate sexual encounters, talking too much, staying up too late...well it's better than being depressed...I think

I missed the gym last week so must go today and also do some work and eat my healthy food

I am off on longish bike ride with trailer, to have picnic, and play in woods [slightly scared of long day out with trailer emoticon]

Morning all

So far - 2 nectarines, punnet raspberries, handful of raisins. And a 30 min walk to nursery and back with the double buggy

Cycle ride sounds good Franny - where did you get your trailer? And what age does it start from? DH is talking about getting a seat for the back of his bike for DD1 (who is 2) but I am nervous. Do you feel safe with DS in trailer?

Zippi, don't think we have spoken before but I am (well, was) a big fan of internet dating, Observer soulmates etc. Went on lots of dates, met some great people (and some complete FREAKS) and ended up married to one of them. Would heartily recommend it. Have you done much of it so far?

PSW, hope your early night did the trick.

Am off now to brave the hoardes in Brixton. Need a new mixer for my cakes. Regret my banana bread was not sugar free, but very delish. Could you share the sugar free recipe please?

Back later.

I like the title - are we appealing to a broader crowd? I mean more diverse - not larger. Or maybe also larger.

I just met up with BBB - she came for a picnic with her dd and ds - it was good, my first meeting with a real life mner - and she was lovely.

And we ate fruit and stuff.

It's fab the way keeping up with this thread has actually made me crave more fruit and veg. Just come back from The Stray where some friends and i organised a massive water pistol battle for the children. We all brought nibbles and I brought grapes, fruit juice, blackberries and bananas. Whereas, formerly would have brought crisps, choc etc.

Off for a fabby curry this evening with some friends. May even stick to veggie...

lionheart · 06/08/2007 18:19

I'm the same fmv--crave much less of the bad stuff but also the thread has changed what I buy and therefore what we all eat

(plus DP has started to get a bit competitive about it).

Boco, do tell your bear story.

Report
FillydoraTonks · 06/08/2007 18:22

oooh i have managed to read ALL the posts here, am feeling like I could maybe stay for the ride this time

I have eaten a lot of dry toast and apple juice. and a peach and passionfruit frozen smoothie thing.

I want a trailer on my bike but am scared of freak squashing of kids, reassurance pls.

lion from the odd situations thread?

Well, ...are you sitting comfortably? It was a few years ago in Canada, i was staying with a friend and her family in a lodge, by a lake in the middle of wilderness. Her family slept in separate little bedroom lodges, because you shouldn't sleep where the food is, because of all the bears. So, we were sleeping in the bit where the kitchen and all the food was

We were sitting outside on a little jetty watching the Northern lights, all very breathtaking and lovely - when suddenly, there was a weird screaming noise from the woods and something charged out towards us - being pursued by a bear. We leapt up and ran for the lodge, - which we reached as the bear emerged behind us. No locks or anything. We literally hid under the covers, with all the lights on - and we could hear it snuffling around outside. I've never been so scared.

In the morning, her parents came in, and didn't believe us - said it was probably a deer or something - until they went outside and saw the gigantic bear footprints all around the lodge. And it had taken apart the bbq and licked it clean.

Yay Filly! Yay! Filly! Yay!!!

(was that a good enough welcome back?)

I am horizontal and may have to remain so for the near future. Left house about 10.15. Cycled 4 miles with whopping child in trailer. Played at playground for 1 hour. Cycled another mile. Had lunch. Went for walk in woods for 1.5 hours. Played in different playground for 1 hour. Cycled 3 miles. Went to supermarket. Did shopping. Cycled 1.5 miles with whopping child and trailer stuffed with shopping. Fed child. Put shopping away. Put washing away. Hung up washing. Tidied up. Fell over.

Dolly do you live in Brixton? What were you up to there today?

About the trailer: We got it from eBay for £50 I think. The hitch broke very soon after we got it so we had to spend a bit more getting a new hitch, but this one is much better. I would definitely recommend the proper hitch (axel hitch) which bolts to the frame not the silly clamp on one (chainstay hitch).

I am nervous about it on the roads, yes. I am nervous on my bike on the roads full stop, though - they are full of bloody cars and I don't understand the highway code anyway [non-driver]. It is great on cycle paths, which is mostly where I want to go, and where the road gets dodgy I go on the pavement if necessary . We had a seat for ds when he was younger but it makes the bike a bit wobblier which I am not fond of. The trailer makes it more stable as you are riding, but of course there is the freak squashing problem. Really depends what the roads are like where you want to go, I suppose.

I think it starts from about age 1. Ds is 4 and not quite ready for a tagalong, so we bought this as an interim measure. They seem to have good second-hand resale value. Ds loves it and you can also fit quite a lot of shopping / kit in it.

Will do banana cake recipe and link to photos in a bit.

Boco and BBB glad you had a good time!

Zippi your toes look great (god I am bossy about names)

FMF I know what you mean about the healthy cravings - well most of the time

Thinking about Lullaby and hoping she is ok.
