Recurring pain in breast

I keep meaning to go and see the GP but I’m very busy with work so keep forgetting to call. I will do on Monday though (have set a reminder) just wondered if anyone had had similar.

For about 6-8 weeks I’ve had this sharp pain occurring in my right breast. It in exactly the same spot every time, it’s above my nipple but level with where my armpit is. It isn’t muscular pain or bruised. It comes in a wave and only lasts about 3-5 seconds then goes away. Sometimes it only happens once and others it can go on for 10-15 minutes. It happens every day. Usually in the evening when I’m sitting down (around about this time -it’s happening right now) it’s painful enough that I have to stop whatever I’m doing/reading/saying and let it go before I can start to concentrate again. There is no tenderness or anything in the tissue, no lumps or anything that I can feel is odd.

Bumping. No advice but this happens to me too so I’d like to know what it might be!

Hi bathtime, do you have it daily too? How long have you had it?

I’ve had it for years, the pain is on and off. I’ve asked folk and they say it might be heartburn or a pulled muscle but it doesn’t feel like either

No this definitely doesn’t feel like those either.

I get this on and off, always the same boob and always the same place, again no lump or anything that you can feel and it didn't coincide with periods or anything that you could put on a cycle. I was sent to see the breast care team who said it sounded like a burst milk duct. They did an ultrasound and you could see it clear as can be. My DC's are 11 and 9 so it is while since I breast fed. (I did have mastitis with dc1). The consultant explained that it is often a stress response and because I was worrying that it could be something more serious the stress response increased. Better fitting bras have helped a bit as has a bit less stress.

Sorry, didn't mean to post twice. But the explanation about the ancient stress response (probably in response to food shortage in ancient times) was to prepare to lactate to nourish those who need it. It was fascinating. I was given a NHS advice sheet which I have lost but I bet the info is online.

Oh that’s very interesting loubie, so was there any “fix” for it? Or you just have to cope with it?

There was no fix, just standard pain management e.g. paracetamol if it was really bad. And to be reassured that it was nothing more serious.
I do still get it but now see it as a symptom of being too stressed and needing to take a step back for a while.

And do you find it eases if you manage to be less stressed?

I have been slightly stressed Over the last few months but not to a level I was struggling with. (I have in the past) just normal family life/work/money juggling.

I've had this too (and a friend). Got referred for ultrasound which was clear and given an NHS leaflet on 'managing breast pain'. Apparently I'm meant to take paracetamol or other painkiller for rest of my life (currently 38). Slightly worrying as it means I'll ignore any future pain which might actually signify something bad.

Oh that is a bit worrying, and also that they’re just happy to send you off with unexplained breast pain. something has to be causing it.

I've had this and was referred to the breast clinic although they said pain is rarely anything sinister. I had very thorough examinations and they concluded it was nothing sinister and I had a leaflet on managing breast pain, they recommended painkillers and evening primrose oil. Definitely see your GP though Flowers

This is all very reassuring. Thanks everyone. Will still see the GP of course but if all it takes is some paracetamol I can cope with that.

Please do see your GP, but do you have a lot of caffeine? I had a similar thing several years ago, GP told me to switch to decaf and I've never had the problem since! Might be worth a try.

Oh I do drink quite a lot of tea! That could be it. I’ll try the decaf and see how I get on.

I had something very similar over quite a few weeks and like others was referred to have it checked at the hospital and sent away with a leaflet. As soon as I'd had it checked out, the pain completely disappeared!!

How precise is the area where you all feel the pain? Mine is always exactly the same place I can point to it although it is inside my boob iyswim. And when the ultrasound was over that area you could see sort of a broken line or tube. Hence the milk duct explanation. I can feel it now although I guess that's because I am thinking about it.
I'm not sure being less stressed has made it better (although the episodes of pain are much less frequent) but it has changed how I react to the pain. Now I feel as though there is something I can do about this that might help me feel better and somehow that helps.

Yes this is always exactly the same place. I’ve noticed myself unconsciously touching the spot even when there is no pain happening. It’s been very sore this evening and I’ve had a bit of a feel and realised there is a small “hole” in exactly that spot. A pea sized “gap” in the tissue. Not sure if it’s always been there but I’ve only realised tonight.

I get this too, pretty much in the exact spot you describe

I had a 2WW breast referral a few weeks ago for it but the ultrasound was clear and they just gave me a flyer on breast pain and advised me to take evening primrose oil

I am still a bit worried tbh but it did put my mind a bit more at ease
