Dreadful sore throat

Stressedteacher2435 · 20/07/2019 17:46

I’ve had a sore throat since Thursday. Came on quite quickly but without any other symptoms so no cold, flu etc.

It’s gotten so bad today, painkillers aren’t even touching it 😭 I’m taking paracetamol and ibuprofen but it’s so painful I can barely swallow. I’m also getting pain in my throat when I turn my head which I assume is from swollen glands.

Are there any home remedies you lovely ladies could recommend? I’ve called out of hours GP but if it’s viral I’ll just have to wait for it to run it’s course but the though if spending more time in this much pain is horrible 😭😭😭

I’ve tried strepsils, iced water, gargling with warm salt water.......nothing is helping though.

Any words of wisdom would be gratefully appreciated!! X

No but I feel your pain. I have glandular fever and DH just quipped 'stop banging on about it.'

Ice lollies?

Well, out of hours have no appointments but the GP recommended diflam if I can find a pharmacy open this time of night 🙄

Gorky, you have my deepest sympathy. I’ve been sat crying for last 20 mins not only from the pain but because I’m bloody hungry! I’ve just sent DH out to get ice cream and more honey. Hopefully it passes soon for both of us xx

Have you tried a difflam spray?

You could try gargling with soluble aspirin?

Have you had a look in your throat to see if you can see why white patches?

Definitely get the Difflam, DH had a horrible sore throat this week and it was like a miracle cure, have you got a Tesco nearby, they would have it.

And also Tyrozets are really good and have a time amount of antibiotic in them.

I had similar a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely horrendous. Think it was just a viral infection in the end. Drinking soluble aspirin helped the most and keeping throat hydrated by sipping water. It passed after 3-4 days. Sympathies OP Thanks

Thank you all. My husband picked up some diflam along with the ice cream. It’s taken the edge off thankfully. I also have some of my DH co-codamol that I can take so I can get some sleep.

No white patches that I can see, so it’s probably viral but I’ll try out of hours again tomorrow if there’s no improvement x

OP I had a really sore throat last year which left me feeling desperate, initially the GP couldn’t see any white patches but when she looked more closely she saw it. Definitely see your GP if it persists, hope the difflam helps you get some sleep tonight.

Get some liquid echinacea and put it in diluted squash, that will help a lot to get rid of whatever bug it is. Do you have any lemons or honey that you could put in hot water to drink? If you can have a hot steamy shower or bath which will help you feel better and open up your airways.

If it’s tonsillitis the OP needs antibiotics tbf.

Just returned to say that I've discovered that really cold 7Up is very soothing!

I hope your sore throat passed quickly, I'm up in agony wondering to call GP at 8:30 or to go straight to walk in centre at 8. I've got difflam which isn't touching the pain and sulphadine which is doing nothing. No temperature though which I usually get with tonsillitis. How long did yours take to pass?

lawnmowingsucks · 22/07/2019 06:03

I had this for over a week recently, ear and throat. So unbearably painful. On the 8th day the cold started and the throat/ear subsided.

Stressedteacher2435 · 22/07/2019 18:29

Sorry to say it’s still ongoing 😢 It’s slightly less painful than yesterday but I feel as if the pain is moving to different areas of my throat?! So today it feels further down my throat whereas yesterday it was where my nose and throat join.

It’s the same every summer holiday. As soon as I break up for the six week holidays I get sick, it’s like clockwork! Last year was the flu 😩

Poor you. Do you think it’s tonsillitis?

Are you resting? You need to rest.

Triage nurse at our GP surgery told me to take antihistamines and book a routine appointment last week. I had to call again the next day and ask them to take bloods as I couldn't get a routine appointment. Glad I did as the GF is playing havoc with my liver.
