GROSS PICTURE ALERT!!!! Tonsillitis?

HolyFuckballsBatman · 11/07/2019 21:49

My niece has had an awful sore throat all day, but it only hurts on the one side.

I managed to take a picture of her throat and to me it looks slightly like tonsillitis but no where near 'pussy' enough Envy

Could anyone advise?

How old is she?

It looks like it could be, tonsils look enlarged and looks like there's some pus on the right one (left side of picture). Can you get out of hours GP appointment tonight or GP/walk in centre tomorrow?

Report
Tulipvase · 11/07/2019 21:58

Looks a bit like an ulcer to me.

HolyFuckballsBatman · 11/07/2019 22:01

@Bloomburger she's 19.

@HippyChickMama She's got a GP appointment tomorrow for something unrelated. Do you think she needs seeing tonight?

@Tulipvase an ulcer? On her tonsil you mean? I've looked at her throat so many times tonight I have no idea anymore ha.

Yes, I’ve has a few in the past - very painful but not the same as tonsillitis. I had tonsillitis earlier this year and I felt absolutely horrendous. How does she feel apart from the pain?

Just looking at the picture it looks more viral to me. It doesn't look red or pitted and there isn't any yellow spots or pus that I can see.

Lots of rest and fluid, paracetamol or ibuprofen if she needs it for pain. Throat sprays are her friend.

Report
HippyChickMama · 11/07/2019 22:08

Tomorrow should be fine as long as she seems ok in herself. Plenty of fluids and regular paracetamol and/or ibuprofen in the meantime.

If it is tonsillitis, I don’t think she needs to rush to get ABs unless she really is very unwell. It is generally a self limiting illness (assuming no complications or underlying reasons why it would be a bad idea to let it run its course).

She feels quite lethargic and weak.

I've asked her and she said 'I just don't feel right.'
She has a slight temperature but nothing alarming.
Earache and cheek pain (sinuses?) on the side of the 'bad' tonsil.

We've got some difflam and I've got her gargling (and then swallowing) paracetamol but nothing seems to be alleviating the pain.
I'm concerned about the hole in her tonsil more than anything - her breath STINKS.
Really honks. Like something has gone off.

I'll keep at the home remedies for now anyway.
Thanks all for your replies!

She has an unrelated GP appointment tomorrow anyway. I think she'll ask the doctor but will refuse any antibiotics - don't want them unnecessarily!

@Tulipvase completely agree! I've not heard of a tonsil ulcer - will get googling.

Glandular fever?

Gargle with hydrogen peroxide diluted 1:5 with water once every couple of hours. If it's bacterial tonsillitis it will clear it up in 24hrs.

I think it definitely wouldn’t hurt to mention it to the GP. I didn’t feel unwell with my ulcer - it was just painful.

Hope she feels better soon.

I recently had Quinsy and I was in absolute agony until the abscess burst. I couldn't swallow I couldn't sleep I ended up in hospital. The pain was worse on one side. I have sudferee tonsillitis over the years- nowhere as painful as quinsy

Report
Tulipvase · 11/07/2019 22:28

The other thing that occurred to me was quinsy.......

It could be tonsil stones, Vaughn a collection of mineral deposits that can stuck behind the tonsil and cause pain and swelling, I've had them, sometimes massaging the area from the outside can loosen them.

Report
Greedycushionhoarder2 · 11/07/2019 22:31

Don't know where Vaughn came from

The smell would make me think of tonsil stones. I used to have recurrent tonsillitis and felt so unwell with it much more then a bit of a temperature.

As long as she’s not having problems swallowing tomorrow will be fine to see the doctor

Report
HolyFuckballsBatman · 11/07/2019 22:54

The pain is steady. Constantly in her ear and throat. A much harsher pain on the one side when she swallows.

Tonsil stones fit the crater in her tonsil and the smell - but from what I can see the crater looks clear. There is a ring of white surrounding the crater itself though.

I'll get some hydrogen peroxide tomorrow.

Quinsy sounds quite serious.
I've asked her to break down her symptoms, she's said;

  • Slight nausea/light headedness
  • Pain on the side of the problem tonsil (in ear also)
  • Pressure type feeling in ear
  • Smelly breath
  • Slight temperature
  • Lethargic (feels utterly wiped out.)
  • Weakness

She said none of the symptoms (apart from the pain and pressure) are too bad. She just feels rough and run down.

It's baffling me. It sounds like a virus but the white does look like pus.

I don't know if that picture shows it a bit clearer. It hurts her to open her mouth too wide!

Sounds to me like it could be quinsy. I had no obvious signs looking at it in the mirror. I had a scan which showed the abscess much further down. I was totally wiped with it . Went to the doctor twice and was told it was viral. I had the pressure pain in my ear and nose also - almost like blocked sinus. Temperature and smelly breath also. I couldn't open my mouth and my neck was completely swollen. Being pregnant I was put on a drip and got solpodol for the pain but nothing worked. They were due to lance the abscess but it bust itself that morning. The minute it burst everything drained and the relief was amazing

Oh goodness @Elliesmommy that sounds awful. I'm going to keep a close eye on her tonight - I'm concerned of the tonsil swelling and obstructing her breathing.
She is saying that the pressure/pain around her ear and cheek feel almost sinus-y. Horrible to see her run down like this - she's usually full of beans.

Hopefully the dr will be able to shed some light tomorrow.

Quinsy tends to be one side and swells so much you can't swallow your own spit and talk like you have a "a hot potato." Weird description I know. If it starts to pass the middle it needs to be treated in hospital I was told. Mine cleared with antibiotics at home. Hope she's ok and gets well
Soon.
