What does your diet look like if trying to reduce cholesterol?

I have near abnormal levels and dr recommended strict diet and exercise 3x30mins a week. I have been doing all that for about 6 mths but only reduced by 3 points. latest results are

Cholesterol 179 (range 0-200)
Triglycerides 79 (last sept 37) range 10-150
HDL 60 (last sept 65) range >50
HDL Risk 3.0 (last sept 2.7)
VLDL 16 (last sept 7)
DLDL 109 (last sept 112) range 0-100

I also have RA and low B levels (less than 300) and my TSH is 0.899 T4 1.32

I can’t seem to lose weight and am about 20lbs above my normal (after 4 kids). Have lost 40 lbs since last baby.

Any advice?

I’m going to try to get a second opinion through our medline at work also. I feel my primary dr isn’t helping me. I have high iron also and Low Ferritin. Last time I had such low B12 she gave me injections but stopped when it came up to 790 but then of course it plummeted again and I’m just on OTC vitamins now.

You didn't have 0 cholesterol. That would be fatal.

If you can afford it, a one off trip to a dietitian would probably help.

I have raised cholesterol, and avoid full fat dairy, and too much meat. I have red meat once a month maximum and mostly pulses or vegetarian or fish or chicken. Look up portion sizes- you only need 60g protein daily, in most cases.

A few nuts are good, as cholesterol clings to them, so some is excreted. Lots of fibre. Lots of fruit and veg. Porridge is brilliant.

No I didn’t @lljjk and didn’t say that. I’m just writing the range that is shown on the test for where I fall within it

@sofasurfingsally thanks for that. I’ve started oats for breakfast. Wow that’s low meat consumption, I was thinking to cut red meat to 1/week. Eek.

I’m having difficulty understanding why it’s high, I don’t eat a lot of dairy as I don’t like milk really and don’t often have cheese. I had cut out all prepared snacks (like spring rolls, mini samosas etc) as I figured they be high in fat already.

Good idea to see a nutritionist, I’ll see if our insurance covers it

I have naturally high cholesterol, there is nothing I can do to prevent it as it is hereditary. I can however, keep it under control. I don't have pastry or cream as a general rule, everything else in moderation, as with any healthy lifestyle. I don't smoke, I watch my weight, and I try to keep active (which is hard as I have a problem with my hips). I like my alcohol, but I only drink twice a week, and I don't drink to the point I am drunk very often at all.

Sometimes it's genetic. I have slightly high also but mine is mainly HDL so they are happy about that. Your trigs are low which is good. Some people think trigs to HDL is the main thing to worry about, very low overall cholesterol is not always a good thing.
