Erythema Ab Igne - Hot water bottle rash

So I think I have given myself Erythema Ab Igne, I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant and have been using a hot water bottle a lot due to feeling uncomfortable most of the time.

I have pink / brown marks on my stomach and google tells me it is Erythema Ab Igne. I’m now worried these marks will not fade & I have damaged myself!

I’m seeing my midwife this week so will discuss it with her & see a doctor if necessary but does anyone have any experiences of this to share?

Forgot to add, I will obviously stop using the hot water bottle straight away but it is so comforting and the only thing that helps the niggles as I’m reluctant to take painkillers due to being pregnant.

I do this all the time.

It will fade very quickly.

We used to call it “tinkers tartan”. Caused by sitting too close to the fire.

I very much doubt it’s anything to worry about.

Just use cooler water in your bottle.

From what I’ve read on google it can be permanent & lead onto other serious health conditions. I’ve had it for about 5 weeks I think.

I had this on my pelvic area - I had pain every day from endometriosis and was glued to a hot water bottle or wheat pack all the time. I asked my doctor and he didn't know what it was but once I saw a specialist gynae he recognised it immediately! Pain got better after several surgeries and the right drugs and the marks have gone now though they took a while to fade. I now have the same marks on my back as am now glued to a head pad because of spinal arthritis... at least I know what it is. So the short answer is it should fade over time, and it hasn't caused me any other problems.

Is this the blotchy red patches you get after consistently using a hot water bottle for a while?

If so I have had them on my inner thighs every winter since I was a child. They take a good while to fade but do eventually (in the summer, after stopping the hot water bottle for a while).

I would be careful about putting a very hot hot water bottle on your bump though.

Thanks for responding, it’s reassuring to here people have had it and it will fade eventually. The hot water bottle was always in a cover and placed over my clothes but still I haven’t used it in a few days now!

Will show my midwife just for reassurance when I see her next week.
