Strange smelling wee

So this is really embarrassing but Dr Google isn't helping. I've noticed that my wee smells like cannabis. I have never smoked cannabis. I know it's not the pot trying to clear from my system because it's never been in my system (all I could find on Google). I have an overactive bladder and have been taking Neditol that my GP prescribed in December, but the smell is recent so I'd be surprised if it's linked to that.

I have been neglecting myself a bit lately after bereavement, and have lost my appetite. I can't really eat and when I do it's a few mouthfuls. I am not drinking very much either and am constantly dehydrated. I have been having a scratchy pain on and off when i pee that is like I've been pricked by a pin, the head been a tiny bit of blood localized to my undercarriage (not in my wee itself) which I've had before and my GP was quite relaxed about - she did a uti test and it was clear. The smell however is new, and I've been off food and drink since February.

Has anyone experienced this weird smell? It is just like I'd smoked a joint when I use the loo. It's really pungent and anyone going in after me would think I'm a pot head!

Are you taking Tumeric tablets by any chance,?

Constantly dehydrated is going to take its toll OP. I would start there or you're going to end up really poorly.

Nope. No supplements at all. I take cocodamol and Duloxetine for sciatica, and the Neditol. Nothing else. I don't eat spicy food or drink turmeric tea either. It's a mystery.

Have you eaten asparagus?

No asparagus recently. I ate pasta yesterday (no meat, just pasta and tomato stir in sauce) and had a few bites of duck breast and coconut rice today. I don't think that it is a dietary thing but I could be wrong. I have never had this problem before.

I know that I should drink more, I find it difficult going into the kitchen to make tea or prepare drinks because I'm only doing it for one now, and it doesn't feel right. I know I need to do something about it but I am struggling. I do drink maybe a bottle of water a day.

I wouldn't say it's a mystery, you aren't caring for yourself properly.

Maybe go on meal replacements for the minute if you can't face cooking and get a case of bottled water so you don't have to go into the kitchen.

I'm very sorry for your loss Flowers

My husbands sweat smells very strongly of cannabis. It’s because of some medication he takes. It got to the stage where he had to bring a doctors note into work saying it was his epilepsy medication. No idea what it could be in your case though except maybe dehydration?

Thank you for the reply. So do you reckon it's linked to not drinking enough? I did wonder if it was some sort of keto thing, but I thought that was more like pear drops. I can't actually manage more than a few mouthfuls of food, my stomach has shrunk and I feel nauseous a lot. I was panicking that it was something serious, I don't want to leave DS an orphan.

Start by drinking more from big bottles of water that you can see how much you drink from. Rule that out for a few days. Should be more or less obvious after a few days. If still there, see your gp.

I think you’re not eating enough and are in ketosis. My urine always smells like weed if I don’t eat enough or am on a low carb diet.

Sorry for your loss 💐

My urine can be extremely concentrated when dehydrated and the smell is way off. To be honest I don’t know what cannibas smells like lol, but my wee actually smells like Icthopaste bandages if anyone has actually smelt/used then? I used them years ago for severe eczema. I remember the first day I got the whiff of my urine and I was immediately transported back to my teenage years. If I increase my intake of water it sorts itself out. Try increasing your daily intake, it’s easy to forget to drink water outside of the usual cups of tea or coffee.

Sending huge 💐 for your loss.

Can you maybe try soup..to get fluid in and a bit of substance too. I can understand you not eating or drinking right now. Try little and often.

I think @benevolentassassin has nailed it . Your GP should be able to test your urine of this to confirm.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I hope that you are getting the help you need to work through your grief.

I just wanted to add that Duloxetine has appetite loss and urinary symptoms as side effects, so that could be contributing to the problem along with your stress. Perhaps you could consider switching to another nerve medication for your sciatica instead. Amitriptyline put 12lb on me, and Pregabalin is known for causing increased appetite.

It sounds like your kidneys are struggling to process the medicine you are taking. Of you dont drink enough, they cant flush through properly and then any medicine you are taking just builds up and up. It can be very bad for your kidneys and damage them. I would strongly suggest you need to drink more liquids or eat more liquidy food. Can you buy a case of bottles of water and keep them somewhere in the house that you can get one (with less stress) and try and drink 500ml at least times 4 a day

Sorry for your loss OP.

I have a disability that gives me lots of Uti’s, and I have smelly wee on occasions, I have been taking d-mannose powder, twice a day made a real difference to me.

Maybe worth a try.

I hope it improves soon, drop a sample into GP, in case you need antibiotics.

Thanks everyone. I've got an appointment with my GP next week just to rule out any infection that may have started since my last appointment in April, but am trying to drink more. I am not sure I can drink 4 x 500ml water each day, I struggle to drink 1 x 500ml, but I am trying to up my intake.

It will be the ammonia. Dip stick your urine with testers from chemist. The gp probably tested for uti that’s different. The dipstick will tell you what the pH protein blood content of the urine is. It will most likely be dehydration as the cause and combined with ketones due to starvation. Start drinking more. You need 2-3 litres per day.
