Anyone have white noise generators? Especially getting them for the first time as an adult?

I have heard about them helping with auditory processing issues. I know a couple of children who have them and am considering trying to get a referral back to audiology for my DS, but I have the same issues too and am wondering if they would help me as well. But I’m not sure if it’s the kind of thing I would have to go private for.

Thanks Thanks

Do you have Spotify access or similar you can try listening to white/pink/brown noise via that and see how you find the noise

We use a YouTube white noise video during fireworks for the cat - there are loads on there, so might be worth having a look/listen and see if they help?

Ooh I didn’t think of those. What I particularly want is an in ear thing, as it’s when I’m out and about that the problems are worst - for example if in the mall, and trying to understand what a salesperson is saying, I really struggle because to me the millions of other sounds in the shop (people, footsteps, music...) just feel so loud. So I can’t filter the stuff I’m actually meant to hear.

Apparently this is what the in ear generators help with. My friend’s boys really struggle without them.

I will definitely try to listen at home though thank you, and will get some earphones to see if that helps via Spotify. I don’t normally listen to music when I’m out because I can’t process it, so I don’t own any!

I have them for chronic tinnitus, which I've had for 5 years.

I love them. I literally couldn't live without them. They mean you are never in silence which is comforting when you have problems processing sound.

Tbh they haven't done much for my hyperacusis, but I would imagine it would be worse without them too.

Thanks mia can I ask please how did you get them in the first place? Was it audiology via a GP? I’m just a bit concerned they will test my actual hearing only (although I probably should get that tested anyway), which is all they did for DS for years - but the hearing tests they do don’t replicate the above example of being in a busy place etc.

Both of us are diagnosed autistic and awaiting ADHD referrals. Our auditory processing is beyond shit Blush we struggle so much and I do wonder if it contributes to anxiety as well TBH

Following this too. I've had tinnitus for over 6 years now. When it started I had hearing tests then eventually an MRI around 4 years ago but was basically told you can hear and there is nothing physically wrong so go away (got a leaflet for action on hearing loss and told to look at that site Hmm)

I have coped with the tinnitus through listening to white noise with earbuds on my phone at work, but bedtime is getting harder. Hearing in an open plan office is hard especially when everyone sits at their desks nowadays and talks (loudly) on Zoom conference calls. I must say what? 100 times a day..

Yes, through the audiologist. I'm not sure how easy they are to get though. I was literally suicidal when I saw the audiologist and at the end of my rope with the tinnitus. You may need to be quite direct. Good luck

Thank you. I’m in flare up mode currently (fibromyalgia etc) but will make a non urgent appt I think. Wondering if I should make one for DS and I consecutively. DS was supposed to have a referral back to speech therapy too so might do both.

I need to be pushier about my mental health TBH, it is so affected by all these issues but they just tend to dish out ADs and shove you out the door really.

Tinnitus must be so awful, I’m sorry :(
