Sigmoidoscopy with piles

I've had piles for a few months which have not cleared up. I've been referred for sigmoidoscopy next week but I'm really really worried I won't be able to tolerate anything being put up there. I don't know how I'm going to manage the enema beforehand as (tmi) everything is so sore and swollen. When I was offered the appointment I was told I could have sedation but today they've said I can't but could have gas and air. Has anyone managed this with horrible possibly prolapsed piles?
