Anyone on apixaban? Any bad side effects?

Ive just been put on apixaban for life, are there any side effects i should be worrying about?

My father in law takes Apixaban with no side effects

I was on apixaban for 6 months. I had no side effects apart from slightly heavier periods

Thanks for the replies. I feel like im the only 25 year old whos on blood thinners for life!! Im glad im not on warfarin though.

My dad takes apixaban post stroke. I'm not aware of any side-effects he's experienced, although he has so much going on healthwise that we wouldn't necessarily have noticed.

Any anticoagulant has the potential to increase risk of haemorrhage, so you might notice nosebleeds, heavy periods, bleeding gums, bruising, etc. If these are frequent or copious you'll need to inform your GP. The increased risk of bleeding carries an increased risk of anaemia.

Other side-effects are uncommon and there aren't very many listed.

As you said, it's at least better than being on warfarin, having to have regular blood tests and being at risk of dangerous interactions with lots of other medications (as well as cranberries). Just be careful not to take any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen, aspirin, etc. or things like mefenamic acid if you've had these prescribed previously and still have some around the house) without a doctor, nurse practitioner or pharmacist knowing & approving.
