Holidays and periods...

What are your thoughts? Do you mind getting your periods on holiday or do you take anything to stop them?

I know this sounds silly but I go away in August and I'm really looking forward to it. Its a family holiday. However if my period follows the cycle they have been on for some time, then it will come on the day we go Sad

My periods use to be really light and last only 2 to 3 days. Now they are heavier and they can last 7 to 10 days, in which case it will be more than half my holiday Sad I always tend to be very uncomfortable with them now too.

I'm wondering do I just accept it and get on with things or do I do anything to change when it's due. Ideally I would like to somehow bring it forward to get it out the way before I go, but I will be grateful for any opinions.

I know I may sound pathetic moaning about this but I've been looking forward to going away for so long and my period really isn't something I wanted to take with me.

Tia xx

I sympathise, I have the worst periods and cannot stand having them on holiday.
Go to the GP and ask to be put on the pill. Some stop your periods entirely and some you take for 3 week then stop for a week to bleed.

I used to use the second option. And if the week break fell over a holiday, I’d continue the pill until after the holiday then stop it to allow the period.

Best way I think.

I've literally just been to the doctors this morning to book an appointment to see if they prescribe me Norethisterone.
I'm due to come on the day I go on holiday, and I'm not doing it again. It's hard work, I'm always conscious im going to leak, can I swim? I've got white shorts on!

That's exactly how I feel. It's the worry of leaking and being self conscious. And I really could do without it. Its definitely a trip to the doctors then for me.
Thanks for your help x

Just another recommendation for Northisterone really. My teenage dd has used it for holidays for the past few years & it was brilliant.

Shiny, does your dd get any side effects. I’m taking my dd to get something for our holidays this year but I’m slightly concerned about her trying for the first time whilst we’re away. If you delay then does the bleeding become heavier when the period does start, or the at the next period.

Nope I just have my period. I use tampons so swimming/sunbathing isn't an issue. Norethisterone can play havoc with future cycles.

By the way you don’t have to do the three weeks on one week off with the pill. It was done that way because it was thought women wanted to feel ‘normal’. But it isn’t actually necessary .

Would you consider a menstrual cup, like a mooncup? Sod's law dictates I always get my period when I'm on holiday. My mooncup makes it much more manageable.

I just carry on as normal and feel relaxed as I don't know anyone and probably won't see them ever again. I am not happy to have my period but wouldn't let it stop me doing things.

You can buy norethisterone from online pharmacies or boots you don't need to go to your GP. I bought some last year for the same reason as to delay my period during my summer holidays. lo and behold I actually came on a few days earlier than expected so was only on the tail end of my period when we went away so I never took it in the end

I was having horrific periods, ruined a Christmas last year. October half term we were flying and I couldn't leave the toilet! I also got aneamic.
Tried mini pill which didn't stop them, so now on combined pill. Gp said I can take continually until I'm 50. So no more effing periods ruling my life. I'm ecstatic.

Definitely get some northisterone. I’ve bought it online from the dr fox pharmacy site as that was the cheapest. You can also buy from Superdrug and possibly boots if you want to speak to a human.

Personally I prefer to take it before the holiday to change the date I’m due on as the tablets make me a bit (a lot) pmt ish.

If my periods didn't last as long as they do I wouldn't be looking at my options. Plus I really can't get over the fact I could leak. Whether I won't see the other guests again or not, it's just not something I want to happen to me.
Thanks for all the tips. I will speak to my doctor

WARNING!!!! Please try notheristone in advance!!!!!

It had the opposite effect for me and I somehow ended up with a never ending period on holiday. I also broke my leg, we were camping, you can imagine the faff of going to the toilet in those circumstances. Holiday from hell...

Oh that sounds a nightmare.

I may just do the pill again. I haven't been on it for a while as I'm not in a relationship and am comfortable with life at the moment but from memory that could stop me and even if it does bring me on its a more manageable period that will last a few days
