Mouth ulcers - every couple of days I get a new one - help!

I’m going through a spell of literally every couple of days I get an ulcer on my tongue (usually on the edge but sometimes underneath). They are really starting to get me down. Any ideas on why I’m getting them or what I can do to stop it? I’m getting enough variety in my diet and take vitamin B and D tablets daily.

Ulcer treatments aren’t really effective on your tongue so any ideas gratefully received!

I’ve always suffered with mouth ulcers. I have a gluten allergy and when I’m stressed I always get them. The following three things helped me

  1. Difflam mouthwash
  2. Salt and warm water
  3. Sensodyne toothpaste - when I switched I noticed a change.

Thanks! I didn’t know difflam did a mouth wash, I’ll try that. Any idea why the toothpaste change makes a difference?

I was going to suggest that gluten can cause ulcers. Get tested for coeliac disease?

SLS in toothpaste can cause ulcers if you are sensitive to them. Drastically reduced them in my DD when she changed toothpaste.

I have been tested before for Coeliac disease and luckily I don’t have it.

Can you suddenly become sensitive to an ingredient? I’ve used the same toothpaste for years. I will try another one though!

I get them when stressed - on the edge of my tongue too. They can even make it painful to talk at times. I saw my GP who said I’ve got a geographic tongue, but regardless of that it is deeply fissured. The ulcers can disappear as fast as they arrive.

I eat a good diet too, with bit D supplement in winter. I’ve had full blood tests for something else so know I’m not deficient.

Suggest you see your GP if you haven’t already, just to rule anything out. Otherwise, like above, try to manage it. Salt water gargle is good, and I also use Corsodyl and brush the top of my tongue gently. I find a slightly furry tongue happens at the same time as tongue sores.

Ah I feel your pain.

Avoid toothpaste with the foaming agent SLS. Holland & Barrett sells a toothpaste with natural ingredients which helps me. It tastes horrible but it’s a small price to pay.

Regularly gargle with warm salt water.

Avoid putting dirty hands near to your mouth.

I suffer with mouth ulcers really bad. They are huge and I get multiples at the same time to the point its near impossible to eat or drink. Luckily I've had a good break from them, fingers crossed. Last year, presumably due to stress they were savage though. Difflam was just the best thing ever. Totally put my mouth to sleep.
I saw it in the pharmacy the other day and smiled and remembered how good it was to me lol Grin it is honestly the only thing that has ever gave me any relief.

Difflam was a godsend! When they’re so painful and you can’t eat or talk it’s amazing as it’s an antiseptic so just numbs the pain!

Agree with NorthernSpirit. Sensodyne toothpaste (make sure you read the label and get one that's SLS-free). I used to get them regularly and since switching toothpaste, hardly ever.

Ask your GP to prescribe you some Gelclair. You can also order a free sample from their website. Ulcers are terribly painful, especially on the tongue. You may need referring to an oral med clinic where they will do more thorough checks including blood tests.

I also noticed an improvement after switching to SLS free toothpaste such as most sensodyne ones.

Classic symptom of B12 deficiency/pernicious anaemia so I’d ask for a blood test.

Could you be allergic to something you're eating? I get mouth ulcers if I eat walnuts.

I was going to say that my mouth ulcers were due to B12 deficiency.

I also get them if I eat tuna in sunflower oil - apparently fish oils can be a common cause

Vit B supplement. I actually shorten up the duration of mine by taking a whacking dose of it.

I had a spate of them a few weeks ago which coincided with a dental appointment. The dentist knows I am wheat intolerant which usually causes them but this was a bit different, she suggested upping my iron levels as anaemia can cause them. It seems to have worked.

For mouth ulcers I always use Anbesol Liquid. Got rid of them very quickly.

Chronic mouth ulcers are often due to a deficiency in vitamins or minerals. You might want to get your levels checked or try a daily vitamin for a while and see if you improve.

All good advice above. My ex H suffered terribly until he accidentally discovered that eating an egg a day kept them away.

I get them when I'm low on iron. Have you had a blood test?

I get awful ulcers. I have ever since I can remember I was told that there is nothing I can do to stop them but various solutions t try and ease them when they are here.
I also like difflam spray. Weirdly I never got a single ulcer whenever I was pregnant....

I swear by pineapple! If I have an ulcer I always go and buy fresh or tinned pineapple and they go away!

I use Iglü pastilles they are great if you can find them. And there is no trying to put gel on as it’s more like a sweet
