Normal amount of sleep?

I am a little concerned about how much I sleep. I go to bed at 08:30 every night and up at 06:30. I don’t go straight to sleep, but once I am asleep I don’t wake up at all. I would say I fall asleep around 9pm and sometimes snooze till 7.

I am about 1/2 stone over weight but I am fit and well. I eat well apart from the odd take away and chocolate bar. I do often feel groggy and tired despite the amount of sleep I get, by night time I am shattered and well and truly ready for bed.

My doctors does not see any of this a problem and Is not happy to run any tests. Would be great to hear other people’s sleep routine

Do you have any children? Are you going through any stressful situations at the moment? Hows your work life?

Maybe see another gp? Surely there's no harm in doing a few basic tests. Iron levels and thyroid maybe

I go to sleep around 9PM and wake up at 6.30 so not dissimilar. I would sleep longer if I could but I do suffer from an autoimmune condition. I think the amount people need to sleep varies based on lots of factors.

No children, a tough 12 months in all honesty, lots of change and a vile relationship which has thankfully now ended!

Work life, fairly mundane job, only 37.5 hours a week. A lot less than I used to work

I am normally asleep before 10pm (often by 9,30pm), normally up by 6.30am at the latest. I have a 3yo who co sleeps and a baby if 6 months who I breastfeed so am up regularly albeit briefly through the night. I can’t say I feel exhausted but I do look forward to bedtime!

That sounds blissful. I sleep around 5 hours a night and have done for years and years. I’m constantly exhausted but just cannot sleep longer than that.
It sounds like a lot of sleep to me, but everyone is different.

I wish I was you, I’m lucky if I get 3 hours. My kids are grown up and I’m absolutely exhausted.

I honestly don’t think I could function on any less.. when I speak to friends and work colleagues about the amount I sleep they cannot believe it.

Bless you if you struggle to sleep and need more, I can imagine it is torture for you

The thing is, you’d have to function on less if you got less for any reason. You couldn’t just stop living! I have no choice but to function on less.
That doesn’t mean that you have to function on less though. If you’re happy with the amount of sleep you’re getting then fab!

I wake up between 6.30 and 7am every morning and I go to sleep mostly around 9-10pm. Some days I need a "catch up" and will actually fall asleep at 8.30 putting my son to bed, others nights I want some time to myself and stay up later like 11pm. Although I average 9 hours sleep a night, I am still tired frequently but I put this down to lots of mini wake ups in the night as my ds comes in our bed during the night and has night terrors and sleep apnea etc so my quality of sleep is not always great.

I would love to sleep as long as you do. Had a sleep problem for years.

Most likely you are not getting enough quality sleep on less, ie. REM and deep sleep which are the key parts of a good night sleep. Going through a stressful period will impact on deep sleep. Try meditation and mindfulness. In the meantime, if this is how much you need to function, that's how much sleep you should get.
