High dose Lansoprazole for GORD/Gastritis- Side Effects

Hi, is anyone taking 60mg of lansoprazole a day and if so do you have any side effects?
30mg doesn't control my symptoms so the GP has said I need double. I've been on it since August and wonder if it's causing me to be so tired? I'm at the GP next week so will ask her then but in the meantime if anyone has any experience that would be great.
For fuller info I don't drink alcohol, don't drink coffee or fizzy drinks or fruit juice, don't smoke or vape, don't have a high fat diet, vegetarian, no spicy foods, healthy weight and regular exercise so nothing lifestyle I could do up improve things that I'm aware of.

I'm on 40mg and have been for over a year. Haven't noticed anything new but I have so much going on I wouldn't. I am stuck on them for a while as every time I try to reduce to 20mg the cough comes back (and I coughed at night for 1 year before we tried this). Just got told I can't stay on them much longer so no idea what I do next. Good luck!

40mg is an odd dose. Is that under specialist care?

I was on lansoprazole for a while and found it made me really tired and also belch constantly although it did get rid of my reflux (hiatus hernia and Barrett's oesophagus) I switched to 40mg of omeprazole and that seems to suit me better no side effects at all, so perhaps try swapping to a different ppi. Sparkly I don't know why you have to stop taking them but I have to stay on them for life due to the Barrett's, I also know several people who have been taking them for years with no side effects.

Yes I had tons of tests before they put me on that. Good to know I can keep taking it if I have to

I'm on 30mg morning and evening. I haven't noticed any tiredness that I could attribute to the meds, but I'm on it a long time.

Have you had a gastroscopy for the diagnosis?

It’s not really a drug designed for long term use. It can lead to deficiencies in things like B12

You need to look at the cause of your reflux. Has this been investigated?

I was on it for some years. 60mgs for a time reduced to 40mgs. New GP was concerned about kidney damage. So I went onto ranitidine. Now you cannot do this cold turkey it took a few weeks to wean myself off it. I feel better on the ranitidine. I still have a 5cm sliding hiatus hernia and gerd but it is manageable with a strict diet and Gaviscon at bedtime.

Omeprazole and Lanazaprole also rob the body of calcium so I was concerned about bone density, no such worries with ranitidine.

I struggled with lansoprazole so got switched to omeprazole (40mg) , which had fewer side effects.

HOWEVER, my symptoms didn't improve much so I stopped taking them. OMG I had the worst ever rebound symptoms. I had so much acid that it was burning the back of my throat and nose and if I blew my nose it had blood in it. Also had blood in stools (sorry if TMI).

Just wanted to warn anyone thinking of coming off these acid suppressants that you should do it gradually. My mum refuses to cut down on hers (despite side effects) because if she doesn't take them her reflux is so severe. But I fear that's partly due to this rebound effect.

Hope you manage to get your prescription sorted OP.

The rebound effect is real. Which is why my GP had me taking omeprazole and ranitidine in tandem for a month or more if I had the rebound I took an omeprazole to calm things down.

week 1 40mg omeprazole plus 40mg ranitidine. daily
week 2 20mg ome plus 40mg ran. daily
week 3 20mg ome every other day plus 40mg ran. daily
week 4 onwards take ome. as needed plus 40mg ran. daily

I did have to take some extra ome. when the acid was bad. I have not had any for a month now. I do feel better, my bowels are better I am less tired.

Thanks for the replies.

Last summer I had to do a h-pylori test and to do that I had to stop the lansoprazole for 2 weeks or was it 4, cant remember. I was given ranitidine instead. It was hell. When I went back to get the results I was in tears at the pain and so fed up. Took a month to settle again. It was negative anyway.

I had a gastroscopy in 2006 and was diagnosed with gastritis. Then discovered I was pregnant and spent months vomiting and living on Asilone antacid liquid.

I had an eating disorder for 20 years and at my worst was vomiting several times a day so think I've done some damage there Sad

Two more pregnancies with 24/7 sickness hasn't helped things.

I can't take ibuprofen as even one dose irritates despite the 60mg of lansoprazole.

I was sick at new year for some unknown reason and it took weeks for the pain to settle.

It often feels bruised under my breastbone and I'm perpetually bloated.

I've given up on the bloating as been that way for decades now and changes to diet don't particularly help. Dietary restrictions get my eating disordered brain going haywire too.

My parents were/are similar and mum has a hiatus hernia.

PP who changed their diet-what did you change?

Hi I have had to make drastic changes to my diet, no alcohol which is ok as not a big drinker, no caffeine which was hard as I am a big coffee drinker but have gotten used to the occasional decaf, no chocolate, no fried food or spicy food, no cooked onions or tomatoes and have swapped dairy for soy. I also eat much smaller meals with lots of salad and fermented food such as sauerkraut, on the upside I've dropped 2 dress sizes which was much needed and seems to be helping the hiatus hernia. I also have a wedge under my mattress so sleep on a slope which has really helped.

I've had to change the way I think about food, I try to think about the benefits to my body and how the healthy foods are preventing the Barrett's from progressing in to cancer rather than feeling deprived because I can't have chocolate and dairy.
