Excruciating back pain

A while ago I started suffering with really bad upper back pain. I assumed it was because I used to carry quite a lot of stuff (books, to be precise) on my right shoulder.
I have recently bought a new mattress, and my back pain is even worse. I wake up with a burning sensation in the upper part of my spine and on the sides of it.
I'm pretty much in pain 24/7 now. I wonder, is the mattress too firm? It's a medium firm mattress and I sleep on my side...
Also, does anyone have any advice on how to deal with back pain? Thank you

Is the pain there all the time? It possibly also might be excess stomach acid as this can cause back pain like someone nudging you in the back. Or the burning sensation especially at night if your stomach is empty. Or after drinking alcohol, spicy or heavy food late at night. The acid creeps upwards when you are lying down.
Try taking Gaviscon 3 times a day and see if that helps. Or if it goes away after eating or drinking milk. Got to GP also.

If the pain has been there for quite a while I would see the GP for a proper diagnosis.
