Have you been rinsing with salt water ?

I seem to remember having a tooth pulled a long time ago, and the dentist said it was because old blood and bits of food were rotting in the hole. You really need to rinse.

If you are rinsing, then I have no idea.

Hi, im a dental nurse & it sounds to me like you have got an infection there called a dry socket, you will need to go back to your dentist asap to have it cleaned out & some antiseptic put in. hope you feel better soon.

I use to be a dental nurse and if it is agony (like an abscess) 1 possiblitiy could it may be a septic/dry socket. this is when the sockets get exposed and becomes infected.
I'd go see your dentist 1st thing. If it is that it's easily fixed but you have my symphathies. Had 1 myself.
A dentist would obv be able to fill you in better so this at least will bump it.

Poor you Franca - I hope it gets sorted.

Can I join the queue for dental advice? I was having bursts of toothache, generally as soon as I drank any alcohol, but not lasting long, and not every day. It went on for a couple of weeks until I went to the dentist and she said it was a gig filing #old and leaky', and the nerve was 'complaining' but not at root canal stage. She replaced the filling with a nnice new white one (at huge cost). She said it might take a week to settle down. Now, 3 weeks later, it is doing exactly the same thing. Why does drinking alcohol set it off? It's ok most of the time, but every few days has a really painful 10 minutes. Will it have to be root-canal treated? And my expensive filling drilled out?

Oh i had dry socket twice...is horrific!

It happens when you have a tooth removed and the clot that forms comes away, you get a nasty infection, i remember my dentist said it had gone to the bone iirc.

They pack it with gauze that tastes like clover oil and give you AB's.

Much sympathy and hope it gets better soon, get in with your dentist asap!

Take ibuprofen and paracetamol, at regular intervals, not together, but take paracetamol then when you feel it getting a little sore again (say 3-4 hours later) take ibuprofen...it helps keep the pain under control, but remember to take with the right time in between.

gosh Bllu, I hope you won't need root-canal treatment, as this is what originated this awful mess.
Relieved to know they won't need to drill here again. Pucca, I've been on this cocktail of Nurofen-paracetamol since wednesday... I start to feel like one of those hollywood actors addicted to pain killers !!!

Franca...I know the feeling, but the relief when you take the next dose is amazing lol!

Make sure you get in to see the dentist tomorrow, when you phone tell them how bad it is, don't leave it till Tues, the sooner you get the AB's the sooner you will feel better...

Actually iirc, when i phoned my dentist up, they just got a dental nurse to have a look, told me to go straight down, she packed it and they gave me the prescription there and then.
