Does a 20 minute walk = a 10 minute jog?

Finish work at 6.00pm tonight, cause of dh's plans we will be eating dinner at 6.15/6.20pm ish.

I want to fit in some exercise before this dh sugessts he picks me up (I don't have the car as I walked to work today [polishes halo]) then when i get home I go for a 10 minute run.

I say I'll just walk home from work - it's approx 20 mins.

Dh says walking is NOT proper exercise and a run is better.

Who is right please?

I'm a Virgo too.

Ok - my opinion - 20 minutes walking at a good pace, arms pumping, is good exercise. But will you be walking like that (I'm thinking work shoes here) or will it be more of a leisurely stroll? If you have your trainers on then run home.

Walking is not as good cardiovascularly as a run because you won't get your heart rate high enough but on the other hand if you would only be running for 10 minutes...........at least it's stretching out your leg muscles and is absolutely better than nothing.

Saggar - I do not have trainers on no. I have heels on, so I would totter home if you like.

Walked to work today as well. Will do proper run tomorrow.

Olive I used to be svelte with no exercise but since hitting 30 I can feel hips expand if I don't

Ah I have been doing a 10 min run for two weeks now - I know its not much but I am knocking on a bit and I'm flippin knackered when I've finished.

Do the run, it'll be over quicker

lol at you 'knocking on a bit' Jools. You do know that over 35's are considered vets in running circles?

You are positively ancient

Well done though!

I was recently told by practice nurse (whose recently lost reams of weight and really toned up) that if you are walking for exercise you MUST walk at least 45 mins for it to have any real fat burning effect. Apparently the first 45 mins of walking uses mainly stored water in the muscle (or something!) for energy (so explains why you need a drink after a bit)but after that you start effective fat burning as the muscles warm etc. I dunno, it sounded feasible when she said it!

But I thought it had to be min 20mins excercise for it to be beneficial (cardiovascular wise).

If it is weight loss then 10 min run prob better than 20 min walk. Overall health wise 20 mins brisk walk better than 10 min run (says SMS who can't remember the last time she did either)
