i know there is the obvious running around after him! but i want to do proper structured exercise a few times a week.

i do lots of walking. Mon and tues i work. i walk 50mins in the mornings to get ds to nursery then to the bus stop for work, then walk 1.5 hours from work to nursery then back home again.

The rest of the week apart from general walking i dont do anything.

what can i do that counts a proper exercise that i can do with ds with me? Even when i take him swimming i dont really get a chance to swim

blimey - that sounds like quite a lot to me, even though it's mostly in the first 2 days of the week, I'm sure all of that long walking and tearing around after DS is doing you lots of good. If you're fit and healthy and the right weight, then I wouldn't worry about fitting in extra.
If you have a partner, why don't you get a babysitter once a week and both of do something fun - badminton, salsa dancing etc.I hate exercise that seems like exercise so by building it into your daily life (and lots of walking) which you do, makes it seem like less of a chore.

Yoga ... not the contemplative stuff (which would be impossible with a 2.4mo), but the hatha yoga. Just put something on the floor, buy a good book, and get stuck in. It is fantastic for re-defining body shape, building up stamina, and easing back ache.

I got DS a yogabugs Dvd which we do together and my 17mth old tries to copy some bits.

You do sound like you do a lot anyway..do you walk fast or just at a stroll? Maybe speeding up the walk or even jogging with the pram if it is suitable.

Could you join a gym with a creche? I leave DD in the creche, and, to be honest, I really enjoy the break from her! Otherwise you could put your ds in a pushchair and jog round a local park. There are a whole bunch of mums that do that here, then go for coffee together after.

Cycling with a child in a child seat is quite easy. the children like it too.

Hi,
I have recently decided that I want to do exercise, I have always done a fair bit of walking, but like you felt I wanted somehting more.
Until then I have always made the usual excuses, of not enough time, and yaddayaddayadda, but tbh, that is all that it is....if we want to do somehting enough, we usually find a way.
And I decided to make the way I look and feel more of a priority.
I started doing 2 Exercise DVD's a day....at first I did mostly 30minute workouts (Davinas 3-30minute workouts, and Tae Bo Basic workouts are great for that) and now I try to do between 1-2hours of exercise a day...so, some days it's still only 1/2 morning and night, others I do 2 hourly workouts.
It does mean that I have to get up pretty early in the morning now, around 5.15 am and sometimes it's quite late when I finally get to exercise, but I have now come to a stage wqhere I don't feel good, unless I have done something.
My fitness levels have increased so fast...and I now find even Davinas Power of 3 pretty easy....and that one killed me the first time I did it, lol, and I also can now do the Tae Bo advance workouts...they are not as easy though, lol...they are still killers...!
Sorry am rambling here....I know!
Another thing we recently have done is get a big Trampoline for the garden, it's not up yet, but I can't wait...I didn't really buy it for the Kids, you know, lol!
I certainly don't regrett my decision and even though at first it was hard some mornings to get up...I now do get up looking forward to doing my exercises...how weird am I

thats a good idea with the exercises i might give that a go. Its just finding the time to do it.

also, never thought about getting a child seat for a bike. ive been thinking about getting a bike to cycle to and from work.
i could cycle to the park and ahops etc with ds in the seat... great idea!!

sounds like you get a lot of exercise from your walking, I wouldn't feel guilty about not doing more!

3andnomore - remember to go to the toilet before you start bouncing on that trampoline!

Thig is, and I might be wrong, but walking obviously is brill exercise if done at a good pace, it doesn't necessarily tone the whole body, does it...and that might be what teh OP would like to do????
Obviously I might be wrong, lol

Is there a buggy that you can jog with that isn't mega bucks?

Report
juicychops · 19/05/2007 18:16

not sure but really dont have any money to buy one even if it was cheap

my main aim is to tone my flabby bum. Whilst walking is good exercise my bum needs a bit extra

We have a local running club for mums. Mums take turns running and minding the kids, iyswim. It works pretty well.

All my other ideas (biking and exercise tapes) have been already said by other people.

I have a step & weights which I use at home & could be done wherever or wherever. Think they only cost £30 in total.

Step does get a bit boring tho so I also go running.

Or how about something like one of those ab things if you want to do stomach exercises.

Am now feeling really guilty because I haven't exercised for a few weeks ....

To tone your bum, all you need to do is kneel on all fours, put one leg straight out behind you and do little raises up and down for 10, then swap legs and repeat as many as you can. It's s'pposed to be great for bums (not that know as I need to actually do some!)

In Davina's DVD they do alot for legs and bums...lots of lunges, and whatever else...but also the exercise luciemule mentioned.
For equipment...join your local freecycle and see if you can get something that way.
I got my rebound trampoline that way and one of those abthings (which I personally don't get on with, lol)

Report
luciemule · 19/05/2007 22:59

Well - I gave the bum/leg lifts a go and it was easy (I did about 40 on each leg) and it only took 5 mins after I'd put the kids to bed.
