Creaking noise coming from son’s ear

This morning I’ve noticed that when my son moves his head or his jaw, a really loud creaking sound comes from his left ear. It’s literally like the noise of an old door or floorboards creaking or squeaking. He is 5 years old can’t decide whether he can hear it in his ear or not. I can’t hear it every time he moves so am reluctant to go the doctors as there’s no guarantee the sound will be heard for the few minutes of the consultation. He is a bit snotty so wonder if it could be related? Does anyone have any experience of this? DH thinks I’m mad as he hasn’t heard it. Thanks.

Can the sound be picked up by recording near his ear with a smartphone? Then you'd have something to show the doctor if it doesn't do it in the surgery.
