Oh S**t, I'm at work and have done my back in again

Tore the ligaments at the bottom of my back in Feb - took ages to recover. I'm sitting at my desk this morning, get up and...snag...I'm in agony again. Dh has moved to Germany yesterday so I've got to look after DS (2.3) later. How the hell am I going to mend again?
Sorry, just needed to moan and get home to the painkillers. I HATE taking them, though. Was prescribed Codeine last time and I nearly passed out from sleepiness.

Is there anyone you can get to come round and look after DS for you?

Oh dear , poor you, back pain is really horrid.

Have you got a physio you can call and get in for an acute appointment.

In the mean time I would recommed.

Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Hot pack (or ice pack, whatever works best for you)
Lie down with a pillow or two under your knees, or on your tummy over the top of a few pillows.
Don't stay in any one position for more than half an hour, keep moving aroung slowly.
Try as much as you can to avoid lifting and bending (I know not lifting a 2.3 year old at all is impossible but try and get him to do as much as possible for himself to 'help mummys back').
I would avoid all coedine based analgesics...they really bung you up which is a nightmare if you have back pain.
Regular paracetamol (+ a prescribed anti-infalmmatory) are the best things for LBP.

Nope - no family and both babysitters are now out of action. One had a baby too, (how inconsiderate!) and the other moved to Holland yesterday. Had the same problem in Feb - DH away for the week and on my own on the floor, unable to get up. It's not as bad as that time but i's making me feel a bit icky from the pain.

If you are in loads of pain and any movement at all is agony (ie you really feel you can't do anything but lie on the floor) you can call your GP for an emergency Home Visit. He can come and give you a shot of something strong to get you moving and some strong painkillers for the short term until the acute inflammation settles.
