Bloody mucus Fromm throat

I had a nasty bout of tonsillitis over the weekend, raging temp, spotty
, swollen tonsils, the lot. Started to feel a lot better yesterday but then last night I felt that I had some mucus in the back of my throat. I spat it into a tissue and saw that it was very bloody. The same has happened this morning.

I have health anxiety so of course I'm thinking the worst and yes I'm going to get it checked out if it persists for more than a few days, but has anyone else experienced this and it hasn't been something awful? It's not coming from my nose, definitely my throat. My throat is still sore but much better than it was, and the horrid white spots have cleared. Just looking for reassurance I suppose.

That sounds like classic post nasal drip, although you don't think it's coming from your nose it more than likely it's mucus dripping down the back of your throat, coming from your sinuses.

Your sinuses don't have to feel blocked for this. As the mucus hits your throat it builds up and causes it to be sore. It's usually worse in the morning as it's been building up overnight. I get this on a regular basis and have a bout of it now. My gp and pharmacist recommend antihitamines to dry it up.

Thanks honey, that's really reassuring. I was thinking pneumonia and lung cancer so I'll settle for post nasal drip!!

I too get a post basal drip, which makes me cough a lot (the drip lands on the cough reflex point.

Its a bit drastic, but one sure way to dry out my sinuses is to swallow a crushed close of raw, fresh garlic first thing in the morning, followed by a big glass of water (and just possibly, a handful of parsley, which is said to get rid of the smell of garlic. I can feel the garlic drying up the tubes. Repeat every day until the sinuses are no longer dripping. First time, it took nearly ten days, now it seems just two or three days and Im all good again. Almost magic.

Wow Finally that sounds amazingly effective. Don't know if I fancy it just yet though!!

I'm not coughing at all although I am a bit snotty. The thing that worried me is that the mucus is very bloody, esp in the morning (it was again today.) Is that normal with post nasal drip?

Can't diagnose you obvs. but it's fair to say that when my sinuses are inflamed and hence dripping (TMI, sorry) to get a lot of nose bleeds. Once one if the tiny vessels ruptures it is then v v prone to bleeding.

It all goes away once the inflammation dies down. When I cough, I do find myself thinking is this bad enough to start the raw garlic 😆

I’ve just come across your thread and your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. What was your outcome? How long did the blood and phlegm last? I had a really bad viral infection with sore throat but now left with coughing up thick phlegm which sometimes contains blood.

I had this at the end of last year after a vile cold. I was so scared I called 111. The nurse told me it was due to the tiny blood vessels at the back of the throat being broken with coughing so much, and really common. I did go to the doctor a week or so later because it went into my sinuses, but by that point there were no problems beyond a sinus infection, and my chest was completely clear.
