Those with underactive thyroid - can I take a poll? What dose of thyroxine do you take?

Read something during the week which said that most people are on 1.25mcg (or is it mg I dunno!) and I wondered if any of you on here take thyroxine and what the dose is?

I'm on .75 and am seeing dr next week for results of a blood test which I am 99% sure will show my thyroid is still underactive; I feel awful, exhausted and am ill all the time just as I was before diagnosis. I wondered if he would hike me up to 1.25 rather than creeping up by .25's as we have been so far. It just seems to be taking forever to get the right dose and my life is adversely affected in the meantime!

TIA.

Thanks Xena. I find it comforting that others are on bigger doses, it makes me realise that there is a good reason why I am ill and p*ed off with life when there's no good reason to be! Anyone else????

i'm on 75 mg 6 days out of 7 with 100 mg once a week.

Can we add TSH and T4 nos as well as I'm relying on my useless gp for dose advice and would like to compare. I was at 11 for T4 which is ok but 3.8 for TSH which I think shows my thyroid is not very responsive. GPs seem to have a wider range of acceptable (1-4) than endocrinologists who seem to prefer under 2.

Thanks margo. I've not heard of someone having one day a week on a bigger dose, that's interesting.

My T4 was 11 as well which as you say is on the low end of normal (I was told 9 - 19 is the range) but my TSH was raised, I can't remember that number from my last test which is annoying as that's obviously the key number for me!

You're right about your TSH being 3.8 showing you're still underactive. My mum had a dose raise recently and her TSH had apparently gone down to almost 0!.

They have to slowly take you up(and down) since going too far either way is a bad thing. There is a huge range in doses requred, different people need differeing amounts depending on how much work their thyroid can do.

It is a PITA getting to the right does, but the docs do have to be careful over this

But yuo have my sympathy

I'm on 150mcg now but it's taken years to get my dose right. At one point I was on 250mcg & it was okay for a while but then tests showed that the dose was too high. Can I just ask - those who are on Thyroxine, have you always been under-active or were you (like me) over-active & are now under-active post-op?

I started on 50mcg when I was first diagnosed and was on this dose for several years (borderline results, but was symptomatic), during and immediately afetr DS was born. My dose and was increased to 100mcg about a year ago, which made a dramatic improvement as since DS was born my thyroid levels had plumetted.

Don;t know what my current levels are though.

So it is possible to increase by a 50mcg amount if indicated.

I'm on 300mcg a day - keeps going up but 300mcg seems to do the trick (at the moment!)

thanks so much everyone. As you say MB there is a huge range of doses required, obviously!

This has spurred me on to really tell it like it is to the dr and hopefully he will raise the dose accordingly!

The info in my thyroxine packet says something like people tend to need 2-3mcg per KG of body weight, but this is obviously a rough guideline. I need less than this. However I have also found that if my dose is too high, I feel just as scummy as I do when it is too low and my symptoms of overactive and underactive are hard to distinguish. I didn't believe my doc when she suggested reducing my dose (based on very low TSH), but it worked.

I stabilised at 150mcg and have been on the same dose for over 20yrs and through two pg's.

my dad was on 75mg for ages but the Dr kept telling him his thyroid was not showing a reading and so he couldn't increase the dose.

he came off completly when they moved because he is a stubborn old git. but when my mum finally got him to the Dr's he had a blood test that showed his thyroid function was normal???

he still has every single symptom of underactive thyroid but he is just tired of the messinga bout so wont go back.

I take 100mcg of thyroxine and 25mcg of cynomel (T3) a day. My blood results are all ok but i have days when I feel shocking and others when I'm fine.I know when I am not good because then I fall asleep for an hour or so in the afternoon. I think your dosage sounds a bit low though.

i am on 75mg. used to be on 150 or 175. i am constantly tired but even after a million blood tests apparently all is ok. check they are testing your tsh levels as well as t3 and t4 levels.

thanks for these responses. I guess it's difficult for lots of people to get the right dose.

will let you know when I get the results!
