Would you wake a sleeping 3yr old to give a missed antiobiotic?

She's got an ear infection diagnosed this morning. Currently I have 2 with Chicken pox and she's just recovering from that but has gone down with an ear infection. So she's only had two doses.

So would you wake her?

No - she will be fine. Many GPs are beginning to believe that antibiotics are not essential for ear infections anyway.

No. Let her sleep.

If she wakes you can give it, if she doesn't it won't be any big deal.

No I wouldn't.

I do believe that anti biotics are needed in most cases though as they can become very painful and red, I had infection in both ears and also a very bad chest infection while I gave birth this time and it was awful. I really needed the medicine as I'd had both infections for over 3 weeks. My chest and ears became extremely bad, I couldn't even breathe properly and it was agony every time I moved my head.

Sorry I meant to say that she came in and said to me (after I'd put her to bed) that she needed her medicine. Having spent the day up to my eye balls in piriton/medised/calamine lotion for the other two I just completely blanked out that of course she needed the antib for her ears - poor thing. but I must admit you're echoing my thoughts that at the moment its better for her to sleep. Thanks. Was feeling like a bit of a crap mother for a moment then. (Blooming tired at moment from a house of poxy children! (sorry couldn't resist being able to say that! ))

i would wake to give abs if it was further on in the course, not on 1st day, as it is later on when all the really stubborn nasties are hanging on till day 5 you don't want to encourage those SOBs

tbh I'd fill the syringe, half wake child then get it them quick - one less dose to fight into them during the waking day!!!

The absolute worst ear infection any of my dds has ever had was whilst recovering from the pox - she didn't sleep for 3 days!

Yes sorry I would as antibiotics have to be given religiously for them to work properly.

Honestly GP wouldn't give DD3 (10mish) ABs for her last ear infection (oozing gunge and everything). Told me to come back if it was still oozing in 3 days.

Needless to say it wasn't and she dealt with infection herself

Just give it to her when she wakes up. It is important to give antibiotics at roughly the right time until the end of the course, but one delayed dose won't matter.

My mother has significant hearing loss due to untreated ear infections.

SlightlyMadSkyscraper - I suspect the reason why your GP didn't give your baby antibiotics is that in some cases the oozing from the ear is a sign that the ear infection is clearing up.

Give them whenever she next stirs.
