Snotty nose for 4 months (ds2, not me!)

DS2's nose has been leaking thick streams of snot constantly since he had a cold just after Christmas. it's usually yellowish but sometimes green or just white. We're getting through a box of tissue every few days and I seem to be spending at least half of every day mopping it up to keep it out of his mouth.
I took him to the doctor last week and got the usual fob-off routine.
Surely this can't be normal, to be going on this long? DS1 never had anything like this.
Anyone else experienced this?

Has he got any soreness around his nostrils (as you would expect if he keeps wiping it)? DD1 had this, and it turned out it was impetigo. I thought she had a sore nose from keep wiping it, but it turned out that it was always running because of the impetigo infection (the other way around than i had imagined) Once diagnosed and treated, cleared up quickly.

If any consolation my dd is just the same,a constant snot monster,of varying colours and viscosity!!!!TMI I am sure.Have wondered about sinusitis or some kind of rhinitis/allergy related thing but haven't been to Gp as is useless and took 6 months to believe me re her reflux. Then I think I am just being paranoid but cannot remember her being snot free for months.

The doc did check him over and couldn't find anything wrong (no sore nose GOHW) so just said to wait for it to go, but I've been waiting 4 months! I do suspect a possible sinus infection but docs don't like to dish out antibiotics these days. I had a sinus infection which lasted for months before I got it sorted and this could be the same thing.

How old is he? My doc said little children "don't really have sinuses". Sounds dubious but I guess he knows what he's on about.

He'll be three in June. I guess your doc wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. I never knew that though.

My son is the same. The doctor gave us antibiotics that did help a bit but as soon as he came off them it started again! Doc has now suggested an allergy but we don't know what to. I have just started him on piriton because if it is an allergy I beleive it should help. He's perfectly healthy otherwise, just a pain in the butt constantly wiping his nose. I'll let you know how we get on with the Piriton.

Haribosmum, i'm glad it's not just me (although obviously not glad that your DS is suffering too). Will try Piriton and see if it helps. Do you know how long they have to take it before you should see some improvement?

I don't know but I think I'm seeing some improvement after a day or so. I suppose all that's left up there has to come out before there's any real improvement. Good luck!
