I am constantly expecting to vom, and to simultaneously become obese with the amount of food I am scoffing...

Found out I was pg approx 2 weeks ago, dont know how far along yet, it was a surprise to say the least... but blimey the sickness has knocked me sideways! I am scared to go out for fear of vomming in public.

I was losing weight at last from dd1, and now it is hard to eat all the crap etc I had got out of the habit of.

this sucks ass

travel sickness bands are supposed to b e good, preggy pops (google them), ginger biscuits (boots sell folic acid with ginger extracts).

Ice cubes, marmite sandwhiches and salt and vingar crips work for me but I don not have terrible ms.

have you thought about asking the GP for anti-emetics? Don't necessarily get rid of the nausea, but at least allow you to leave the house without redecorating the kerb.

Honneybunny · 01/05/2007 21:12

oh poor you.
try ginger ale/beer/tea,
mint tea,
water biscuits before getting out of bed in the morning,
stay away from coffee,

mind you, none of this helped me though

after morning sickness with ds1 i thought it couldn't possibly get any worse... i was sooooo wrong: with ds2 i was sick for the full 9 months . the first 7 i had morning sickness (and didn't gain any weight at all, as everything came out again), and the last 2 i had heartburn.

sure hope this won't happen to you!

cannot suggest a magic food, but much sympathy - this is so horrible.
I was lucky enough to have a window of about 3 hours in the morning when I could eat without throwing up, I just fasted the rest of the day. do you have any times of day when you might be able to eat?

Report
VoodooMama · 01/05/2007 21:14

yeah I had heartburn for the last 2 mths with dd1...thats awful too, but not quite as life-changing as pure unadulterated nausea and vomming.

I dont know about taking anit-emetics, gps are supposed to be loath to prescribe them??

its odd, I can eat throughout the day, but feel absolutely powerfully sick for most of it too...

before I eat and about 30mins after I eat...

taking pregnacare has become a mission in itself - - thats far too expensive to chunder down the sink!

gawd I am fighting this pizza not to come back up...

GPs will prescribe anti-emetics if they think you're in danger of becoming dehydrated - so, if you can't keep down fluids. So, if you were a dishonest type of person and you wanted the prescription, that's what you would say...

I took cyclizine most of the ime for both my pregnancies, and both of my kids have just the one head.

'tis an anti-emetic - a fairly mild one (anti-histamine). Also, I think, an anti-psychotic. Which was also quite handy!

Sorry to hear about your pizza. Plain grilled chicken and boiled potatoes for you tomorrow night, madam.

I can eat curry....I always have cravings for curry and beer, which is odd, as non-pg I am strictly g&t or vodka &T

bah humbug. off to bed.

Thanks for your thoughts people.

Ok DO go to your GP - I was at my wits end by 6wks gone, ended up at the hospital being given an intramuscular injection of lovely, lovely Maxolon! (Metaclopramide) which made me feel nothing for about 8 hours!! Bliss. I went on to take cyclizine, and then stemetil, which was brilliant as although it didn't totally knock the nausea out, it was a suppository {bleurgh) so I didn't have to swallow anything. One up the bum every day made life tolerable...
They are happy to prescribe phenergan which many people swear by, and there are other treatments which are given if you get worse - basically if you can't keep stuff down, that's bad for you, it maks you ketonic which can (rarely) affect the baby too.
Don't worry too much about bubs though as they generally take all they need, whatever!
I found my GP extremely helpful so give it a try.

RE foods to eat, KEEP HYDRATED is the watchword - drinking will make you feel SO much better, dehydration is one of the worst things ever for nausea...
I had an excellent thing which was milkshake with ice cubes in it - I would mix my own even, with a small amount of neat squash in a glass of milk (add it to the milk, not the other way or it'll curdle) and loads of ice - when I couldn't eat food, this kept me going for hours - and made me feel so much better because it was liquid. I often felt I could eat food after a while on this!
Worth a try...good luck honey, I feel for you I really do!

PS skip the prenatal tablets - or have late at night so you sleep through the urge to recycle them - works for my American friends on the forums.

nice advice, FA, I never think to drink a lot... hmm
I could even dust off the old smoothie maker...

its not that I cant keep stuff down, per se, I throw up before eating, and if I dont eat regularly ie every hour..
and about three times in a fortnight I have thrown up big meals but eat toast after..
its the nausea thats the worst. dont think doc will let me have anything as I can keep stuff down, its more a major irritant!

I was the same -ish - I didn't vomit although I came close a fair bit (emetophobic who 'doesn't'!)
but the constant nausea was preventing me from eating or coping with DS, making me very weak and I was crying all the time.
Still it's classed as Hyperemesis, even if you don't lose your cookies!
Sorry you're having such a rough time.
You have a smoothie maker??!! That's what I craved! Yep, wonderful - especially if you can face adding a bit of fruit like banana, or yogurt which I did sometimes - the ice really helps as well. I'm not usually a big drinker at all but milkshakes went down very well, especially cold.
Good luck with this, it will pass before long, I know it can feel like an eternity at the time. Poor you!

Some meds are for nausea, the others for vomiting - obviously the nausea isn't as 'dangerous' but if it interferes with your ability to get on with your life (or cope with other kids if you have any) or stops you eating - they are usually very happy to prescribe something. It's never been studied thoroughly but millions of women have used phenergan and much stronger stuff, without any documented ill-effects on the baby.
I know you always hear about it being hard to get meds for N&V in pregnancy, but things have moved on and people aren't so freaked out by Thalidomide stories these days.
In America they have a great drug called Unisom which works really well for most women - a combo of Vitamin B6 and an antihistamine - which is essentially what phenergan is. (Kids take it for allergies/chickenpox/travel sickness, so it can't be that bad!!)
They can only say no, if you ask.

Feel for you, please try the food suggestions.

In the morning I could only drink very cold, real fresh orange juice (so smoothies might be a godd idea as suggested) and spare ribs fo dinner! Which I don't really like normally.

With dd1, I lost a 14lbs in first 3 months. Second pg was better for me.

Its horrid.
