Hi all, posting for a bit of advice. I was unpacking/setting up a new treadmill and while cutting the white cables holding the base it sprang back abs crushed my hand. It was very painful, I luckily got it out but now it’s very swollen, I can move my fingers though it’s sore and have pain in my wrist and top of my hand I cant really grip anything.

I don’t want to go to A&E due to long waiting hours but I’m after your opinion.. this pic was taken just after it happened and the following is of my hand now.

You need to go to check for fractures I’m afraid. Day is usually better.

Sorry, with that type of injury I think the potential for breaking a bone must be quite high so I’d be off to get it checked - do you have a minor injuries unit you could go to? Ice should help the swelling too, have you got a pack of frozen peas you can put on it?

RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation. Have you put ice on it or your hand on ice (frozen peas or similar)? How does the movement feel?

Tbh, if that was me I would be taking lots of painkillers and using an ice pack and see how I went overnight. It is probably a job for A&E but I would wait for tomorrow. However if It was my child I would be taking them now. not helpful

Head to A&E. I fell in October, put my hand out and broke a bone in my hand which needed screwing back together and had a finger fracture too. I only went to a&e the next day because DH was bothering me.

4 months on and still have a splint as well as OT and Physio. I also have a probably permanently bent ring finger

go now.
proper plaster/bandage also massively helps with pain relief.

Thanks all I’m going to get it checked tomorrow, I can’t tonight with Dd being ill and can’t get her minded as I can’t guarantee how long I will be (DP is at work until 11) we both have the day off tomorrow so will go then. On the upside it gets me out of helping to floor the spare room Grin

Go to A&E or walk in center. I fell on my hand and they were very concerned I had broken a bone in my wrist and I had to spend two weeks with it strapped up going back and forth to A&E for X-rays until they decided I hadn't ( sometimes they can't be sure on the X-ray so had to have it repeated).

If you can keep it elevated overnight it will help reduce swelling. A few pillows by your side to keep it above heart level. Probably fall off in the night....the hand off the pillow, not the hand!

Should be OK until tomorrow, just rest it.

If that's your dominant hand aren't you struggling with normal life? Get it checked out! A badly healed break could bother you the rest of your life..

Do let us know how you get on OP?

Hi all I went to A&E this morning ( I was seen within an hour!) thankfully it doesn’t look like I’ve broken any bones, I’ve to go back in 3 days for a follow up X-ray. I have a splint from my wrist to fingers, no bandage around the top of hand as it’s still swollen. Quite difficult to function as it’s my right hand but coping.

Thank you all very much for your advice, I would have dismissed it otherwise Flowers

Thanks for updating us, I hope the swelling goes down soon! Keep doing the icing and take ibuprofen regularly.
