When you say it's not working, do you mean the diet isn't working and you're not losing weight, or that you've lost weight but it's not helping with the pain?

Oh singyswife,I am about to go out but thought I'd quickly sya that I have pcos, successfully treated and have two dc's,albeit 11 yrs apart.
I find a low carb diet does the trick when it comes to pcos, have you tried it.
I would recommend the clark plan, not as drastic as atkins and a lot easier to stick to
check out amazon for a book.
I know pcos iscrap, but I found following a low carb diet has changed my symptoms a lot. There is hope ,don't despair.

The diet isnt working and so the symptoms arent reducing., It is not actually a diet I have to follow, it is a "new way of eating". It took me 4 weeks to lose 2lb and then nothing else seems to have happened. This has been 8 weeks or so now, obviously I wouldnt be expeciting a change in symptoms yet but weight loss should surely be better than this???

I'd agree with ggirl that a low carb/low GI way of eating is best.

A lot of dieticians/nutritionists etc are a bit anti low-carb diets.

The Clark plan is actually from a book called The New High Protein Diet by Dr Charles Clark. Some of the recipies in it are lovely - very tasty. He also has a newer book out called The Healthy Low GI Low Carb Diet.

I have just started low carb again (today in fact!) with some other MNers. There is a thread which I will bump for you - am useless at links!

I did Atkins a few years ago on a diet website and I know of a few people who successfully did low carb/Atkins specifically for PCOS and it was very successful.

Hope this helps.

Yes, that's where I got it from. If not they should be able to order it or borrow from another branch.

I recommend it most wholeheartedly. Please try and read it, it makes so much sense.

Sorry you're feeling down

Go get the book and feel that you are doing something positive

Hi,

I have pcos and am finding it impossible to lose weight too. Have just started weightwatchers but if that doesn't help I will ask the gp for metformin. Just to let you know that you are not the only one.

Thanks, I know there are a lot of people on here with it and it is nice to share a moan. I always feel guilty when I moan to people who dont have pcos as I often feel they think I am moaning about the normal period. I have heard about Metformin and my mother wanted me to go ask my gp for it, what does it do??

I belong to a low carb site and there are a few people there who are PCOS sufferers, and say it makes a great difference.

Here's the link (let's see if I can do it!):

I had severe PCOS for several years (even spent 18 months with no period whatsoever)until I was referred to a sympathetic and knowlegeable consultant (i.e. female...)
I did a combination of low-carb dieting (no real plan, just common sense: no pasta, bread, potatoes but plenty of soups, fruit, meat, vegs and dairy products to keep me going) AND exercise every day (i.e. 1/2 hour on the bike at a good pace). I was also prescribed Metformin which made me feel really sick to start with but after a few weeks that settled.
Basically it's a very slow process, it took me over 6 months to loose 1 stone but it's amazing the difference it made : feeling fitter, lighter, better skin and I ended up getting pregnant afetr a couple of months of trying(DS is now 15 months)
So my best advice is keep at it and things will start happening!!

I would suggest following a low GI/GL eating plan rather than low carb as it can be difficult to maintain in the longer term.

Collette Harris (herself a PCOSer) has written several books on both PCOS and a cookbook for PCOSers.

Taking Metformin may be another way forward if it is determined you are insulin resistant (some PCOSers are).

www.verity-pcos.org.uk is the website of Verity which is the UK based support group/organisation for women with PCOS.
