Are there any alternatives to grommets for relieving glue ear?

DS1 is 7 and had had 5 or 6 bad bouts of glue ear. Usually follows a cold and last about two weeks.

He has been seen by consultant and as he is not affected socially, speech is good and his progress at school is excellent he said it wasn't a prob and he wouldn't need grommets.

His latest bout of hearing loss has been severe and prolonged (about 6 weeks now) no pain or infection, I can hear he is bunged up.

Not keen for him to have another GA, he reacted badly to his last one. What's tha alternative?

dd has just been diagnosed with glue ear (though it has been suspected for years)and she has been given a nasel spray the theory is that thatwill clear the noseetc of the mucus stuff and then it won't go to the ears.she has only had it for a couple of days so no idea yet whether it will work.

My DS was told to blow his nose hard in the morning to make his ears pop. Sometimes works but he needs reminding.

My son has temporary hearing aids. He has has severe glue ear and we didnt want grommets because they were a total disaster last time. My son hearing is 35 Db down and he is hard of hearing. He can't hear a cat purr and often mishear words.

Some people find Otovent. (A balloon you blow up with your nose) useful.

Honestly 6 weeks is not long to have glue ear. My son has had glue ear since May 2006!

My daughter is awaiting another hearing test and may be referred for grommets soon so watchng this with interest. Last time her hearing was 40-60 does anyone know what this means?

All I know is that she has to be looking at you when you speak to her or she misses it!

Maybe they are refering to how many decimbels your daughter's hearing is down from normal. 40 to 60 db is a moderate hearing loss.

Maybe as it had got worse form the previous test which was 20-30 I think...

Both of them had to have speech therapy because of there hearing

My husband had it done 6 time sna dit has never worked with him so he is really negative about it
