Fluctuating body temperature/overheating after minimal physical activity - why?

I’ve had this issue for a while now (couple of years I think) but it’s starting to really bother me and I don’t know if it’s something I should see the GP for or what.

I have a generally low body temperature and get cold super easily, in the past few weeks i’ve been wrapping myself up in layers and thermal socks even at home, I get so cold. This has always been the case.
However, when I am outside and have to walk anywhere for more than 5min or so, I get super hot and sweaty and almost overheat. For example, this morning I left the house at 6am in the freezing cold, wearing jeans, a thin cotton vest top, a thin knitted jumper over the top, and a thick parka coat (undone at the front). I had a 5 minute walk to my train station, and by the time I got there I had to take off my coat and roll up my sleeves as I was so warm. My hands and face, however, were almost numb from the cold.
About an hour ago I had to go out and walk somewhere about 20mins away, and halfway there I had to stop and take off my jumper and put it in my bag, and walk in just my vest top and open coat (and even then my back was still sweaty).
I’m not dressed inappropriately for the weather, and if i’m just sat indoors I get very cold very quickly, I just heat up really fast and I don’t know why. I regularly do these walks and more, i’m physically very fit (can run 10km with ease) so I’m not exerting myself too much and the walks themselves are in no way tiring. My body temperature just fluctuates wildly and it’s getting incredibly annoying now (I regularly have to change clothes as I’ve sweated through them and I bring deodorant with me everywhere to reapply).

Would a GP be able to do something about this? I’m 25 and I know it’s not hot flushes/gynaecological as I’ve had many gynae treatments/investigtions, and I have regular blood tests for other issues which all come back normal.

Confused

For most people it’s being unfit which makes them get hot easily.

Getting cold v easily can be the result of having had a serious illness.

I know but like I said, I’m physically fairly fit and the walking doesn’t tire me out at all, just makes me overheat.
And I haven’t had any serious illnesses to cause the being cold, I’ve just always been this way.

Is it affecting your quality of life?
Did you have to change your habits to adapt to this?

The answer is yes to both, so I would see the GP and ask a referral to a neurologist. You can't thermoregulate normally, you either feel extreme cold or extreme hot and your body start sweating to cool you down.

Yes see the gp.
Temperature regulation can be linked to several health concerns.

Thanks, I will try and make an appointment soon.

Ohyesiam do you know any specific health problems that this can be an indicator of?

I had this with menopause but it can also be a symptom of thyroid issues.

When severely hypothyroid I was cold all the time but after treatment for a while I veered from being cold to being suffocatingly hot. It is easily tested for.

Being physically fit can actually mean you sweat quicker and more readily. I do a lot of Bikram yoga and I start sweating as soon as my heart rate rises, even when walking. I see very fit people in my yoga classes starting to sweat very quickly and very profusely while the non fit people remain dry as a bone for good long while.

Sweat is the body's way of cooling you down so you become more efficient at temperature regulation the fitter you are.

Nevertheless the extreme fluctuations could be hormonal or thyroid based so worth checking it out.

get a blood test to check your thyroid levels.

I have the same problem.

Did you ever get a diagnosis for this? I’m having the same problem. I’m not overweight, I’m very fit and in the last few months I’ve had serious issues with overheating and sweating when on a casual walk. Conversely I also get really cold sometimes and need to wear a jumper in bed.

My blood results are all normal and the GP says it’s nothing to worry about, but they haven’t done any physical examination or referred me to any specialists. This is seriously affecting my quality of life.

I appreciate I am resurrecting an old post🙈.@Bex876 and @ImCatbug did either of you ever get any clarity.
I have always always had same issue. Freezing constantly but overheat so easily.
When exercising it’s the heat that kills me.
