Intermittent bleeding and cramping with copper coil

My DD2 (24) has had a copper coil for 18m as she can't tolerate hormonal coils or pill. All was ok until about 3 months ago and since then she has had quite severe cramping and unexpected bleeding (enough to go through clothes). I have told her to see the GP just to check it hasn't moved or anything, but is this worrying or just 'one of those things'?
Is there anything the GP can DO?
