Tonsillitis - should I go back to the Dr?

Went to the doctor yesterday morning who prescribed a 10 day course of penicillin for tonsillitis.

My symptoms have worsened overnight and the whole of the right side of my tonsils, gums and glands are very swollen. My teeth are hurting and have horrendous ear ache on that side too. The other side has white spots but not as swollen, painful or covered in spots as other side.

I’m struggling to open my mouth and I’m just about managing to sip water and can only just take antibiotics and painkillers, which aren’t really helping with the pain at all.

Should I wait a bit longer in the hope of the antibiotic kicking in or speak with doctor again as symptoms have worsened? Thanks in advance!

If you start not being able to swallow to have liquids then I would absolutely go back. Keeping hydrated is important.
How's your temperature? There's not much they can do I think except painkillers and antibiotics. And they will take a couple of days to kick in.
If you start to become very unwell, high temp, shivers, unable to drink, vomiting etc then seek some sort of medical attention. My friend had tonsillitis for years and the last episode gave her septicaemia. I think it's rare but can happen so just bare it in mind.

I had this a few weeks ago, so fully sympathise. I would wait a few more days for the AB to kick in unless you can’t swallow water, then you should go back.

Have you got the Difflam spray or mouthwash? This helped slightly, keep taking painkillers regularly and try and stay as hydrated as you can. Hope you feel better soon, it took a good while to feel anything like normal and tbh I still feel wiped out.

Thanks for your replies.

I did go back to the doctor on Tuesday afternoon and he advised it was just a very severe case of tonsillitis, prescribed painkillers and sent me home.

Still no better yesterday so returned back to a different doctor who sent me to A&E as he suspected a quinsy.

Stayed overnight last night with IV antibiotics and fluids and just had the quinsy drained after three attempts BlushBlushBlush another stay tonight and hoping to be back home tomorrow!
