How to reduce chicken pox scarring..

99redballoons · 09/04/2007 17:14

Ds has just scratched off the largest scab on his face, between his nose and lip, and I'm dreading it's going to leave a scar. It's such a prominent position.

I have an aloe vera plant, do you think some of it's juice will help?

I have some bio-oil but not sure if I can put it on an 'open' spot?

Any other suggestions?

Read in another thread about Vitamin E capsules. Just put a bit on ds.

Would love to hear any other suggestions. TIA

how old is he?? My dd had the pox recently and managed to scratch the one on her face too, but she healed amazingly well, use bio-oil after the spot has healed.

Bumping for you (also a bit of self-interest too because ds absolutely covered. thankfully only rubbing his scalp and ears so far, so not so worrying in terms of scarring, but....)

Ds (now 23mths) had chicken pox last autumn and was left with 2 small scars on his face. Haven't used anything on them (mainly because he has eczema and I've been concerned of aggravating it) but in the past few months they have really faded. Sunlight seems to help, and I've also heard good things about Vitamin E capsules.

Meant to add that even though I haven't used anything on ds, the scarring is fading on its own, iyswim. (sorry, pg brain very mushy atm )

Do not allow a vicious babysitter to scrub off spots with a flannel. Causes mental scarring as well as physical

Hiya 99! I've been wondering if anything actually can do anything for chicken pox scars. DS has 2 very deep ones which have now scabbed over and I can tell they will scar. I had chicken pox when I was 16 and I remember that I couldn't believe how deep they are in the skin and I now have a couple of holes where the scabs were! Hopefully because they are so young they might get away with it!

Sorry! Haven't been able to get on the pc..

ditto - tooticky

Ds is 3.10. He is VERY fair skinned, can easily see lots of veins round his eyes etc. He already has two freckles (but they may actually be moles, difficult to tell) on his face so I try to keep him out of the sun. I'm wondering if he's just on the age band where they don't fade as much.

Like zephyrcat mentions, I think it will leave a hole. It rescabbed, and I thought phew!, but he's picked that one off too! I have shown him close up in a mirror and he could see the 'pit' and he got upset that he'll now have a hole there. Silly mummy alert, that was a bit ott.

Anyway, have been putting a drop out of a Vit E capsule at night, and in the day when he'll let me. Will start the biooil in a few days.

Thx again.

It's amazing !!

I decided to put some bio-oil and Vit E capsule oil onto the 'holey' spot last night, twice, once after he just fell asleep at 7:15pm and again at 10:30 when I went to bed, and low and behold this morning there's 'somethin' in the hole, either new scab or new scar tissue, but whatever there is no hole! Just wanted to share this combination with you!

How soon do you have to do it? DD had chickenpox a couple of years ago and has had a small scar above her eyebrow ever since. Anything that can be done at such a late stage?

UnquietDad, my cousin used bio-oil on a scar she had in her eyebrow, and after a few months of religiously putting it on every night the scar disappeared! Amazing stuff I think. Worth a go in my book, but you do have to keep doing it, it's not 'a few days' but 'a few months'. I put it on ds once he's asleep if he won't let me put it on in the day.

Hiya Melsy!! I feel awful we haven't met for such a loooooooooong time. We haven't met each other's second one. How old is your dd2? My dd is 17mo now. I have really hated ds' bout of cp.. it was awful to see him like he was poor thing. Dreading dd's turn.... Will check in tomorrow to see how your dd1 is doing. Lots of baths with a cup of oats in a tied muslin and a bit of sodium bicarb.

OH MY GAWD 17mths , awwww shame I havent seen her, bless. Id love to see some piccys, will check your profile.

Ive got threads all over on the pox , dd1 has 160+ spots and has been quite poorly with it. The oatmeal and bicarb baths have been fab, followed by eurax and then piriton. Ive ordered bio oil and neem oil (for itchiness ) and waiting for some info on sandalwood, great antiseptic. dd1 had eczema as a baby , I read that makes it worse in childhood .

dd2 is 8mths now and such a sweety , I love having 2 girls > , Im hoping that she wont get it as I had it bad as a child and supposedly they get immunity from our blood in the 1st year ?????

Thx crumpet.

Melsy, sorry I haven't had a moment to get on the PC. DD now has c-pox too!!! Argh. She's got LOTS more spots than ds and I thought he had it bad. Poor thing is covered all around her lady bits and is in obvious discomfort pulling at her nappy all time. Managed to get some Eurax this time round, but I can only apply it once a day for a bubba under 3yo. Seems to help loads though. Also the piriton with her.

Hope your dd1 is on the mend now. It seems to take weeks for the spots to finally clear up which I wasn't expecting. Talk soon. x

BTW, the 'holey' spot is now a red blemish, completely filled in. After applying bio-oil and Vit E oil on every night I'm hoping it will naturally fade away.

What is bio-oil and how to I get it? And how much?

DS2 (6) is a mess... his body is shocking covered in "old spot" marks from chicken pix last month.

Is the vitamin e oil from boots?

Report
castlesintheair · 19/04/2007 11:01

You can get bio-oil in any chemist, I think I paid about £9.

I think it's luck re the scarring. DD1 picked all her chicken pox scabs and doesn't have any scars. DS didn't pick any and has at least 2 scars on his face. They are both olive(ish) skinned too

Yes, the Biooil was ~£9 for a small bottle, but it goes a long way as you just dab it on with your finger in small amounts. I have seen in it in Boots.

The Vit-E oil was just from my vit-e capsules which I pierced with a fork and squeezed it out! I haven't been able to find some separately. You can get Vit-e capsules from any supermarket I would think.

HTH
