Chickenpox - is this normal?

DS has chickenpox, he's 10 months. He seems very bad and I'm getting a bit worried that this is normal, but may just be being a paranoid first time mum, so just looking for reassurance really. He is covered in spots - his scalp is virtually a block of them, all round his eyes, lips, behind his ears as well as all his body but what I'm most worried about is around his anus and willy - they're absolutely covered in spots. He seems really quite distressed but is ok some of the time especially in the bath. We are using calomine so he looks like some kind of weird alien baby! Is there anything else we can do? His face is covered and I'm worried about scarring - will they scar? I'm worried about my little boy [sad}

Awww its horrid isnt it.

Try bicarb in the bath. Its really soothing for them.

Yes, sadly this is absolutely normal - poor little stitch!

They shouldn't scar unless he scratches any of them really badly but even then they do fade over time. Tne best thing I found when dd1 had CP was aloe vera gel; much better than calamine lotion, as it was cooling but clear and very sothing. She hardly scratched them at all after we started using this. You can buy it at the chemist.

Sounds normal - poor wee mite though.

At 10 months he won't be great at scratching, so he's unlikely to be scarred. Make sure his nails are short - file them if necessary!

Keep him cool, put bicarb in the bath, cotton clothes etc.

Keep an eye on any spots that look as if they may be getting infected.

There's a cream called Caladryl you could try instead of the calamine lotion - check it's ok for babies and I think you can only use it for a few days at a time.

Good luck.

Great, thanks everyone you've put my my mind at rest. He's just crying constantly poor mite. Will take him for another bath now and put some bicarb in it and send DH out to get some aloe vera gel! Thank you!

Also - how long from now (spots still coming out, some scabbing) to when it's gone and he'll feel more normal again? And is this stage the worst of it or is there worse to come?!
