Dm has been in hospital for over a week getting more and more yellow. She seems to be getting some attention at last and has been told that steroids might help.
However, we're not sure what she has, I can tell you what it's not: cancer, gallstones, hepatitis. She's never been a drinker, nor is she overweight or diabetic.
She's had scans and blood tests but no diagnosis. Any experiences of what this might be?

My sister was diagnosed with Auto immune cirrhosis after a routine liver function test while she was on statins. Could this be a possibility?

Not on statins as far as I know.

Sorry, I meant the diagnosis came by having a routine blood test because she was on statins. She was on steroids for a couple of years and a drug that was called tacrolimus or something like that. She is ok now, although the 2 years on steroids were not nice (weight gain and hair loss) but shes now lost the weight and regained her hair.

Hepatitis just means inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis A and B are specific illnesses relating to the liver which is probably what has been ruled out.
Does she have any other symptoms? Weight loss? Blood in her poo? Any new rashes/marks? Could be all sorts of things. Most liver disease is unrelated to alcohol.
There are a lot of tests to do to get an answer sometimes. Hopefully they will be able to diagnose her soon and start appropriate treatment.

Sorry, don't know all her symptoms, just listed the few things I did know plus a few significant environmental factors .

She's been waiting a long time in the hospital and since some illnesses have been ruled out I thought I'd ask here for experiences of liver disease.

My brother is having liver problems and is having tests for the CMV and EB viruses and the toxoplasmosis parasite in case they are a cause - have they been mentioned?

My husband has hemochromatosis his liver retains too much iron and needs to have about a pint (?) of blood taken often to help correct this. He starts to go yellow and get yellow whites of his eyes with this. If it's not managed correctly he could need a transplant. I've attached some facts on the condition to see if it matches your mums condition. I hope they get to the bottom of it soon xx
