Breast lumps

I had a sudden shooting pain in my right breast and it made me scream out. It only lasted 2 seconds but it happened another 3 times that night. The next day I examined my breast and found a lump, I made an appointment with the doctor who confirmed the lump and found another on the opposite side of the same breast. She said to wait until after my next period and if they are still there to go back. My period isn't due for another 2 weeks but I have since discovered a third lump on the same breast. They aren't painfull to touch but every night I have woke myself up crying out in pain, the same shooting pain I had the first time. My nanna is also suffering from breast cancer and just had her breast removed last week.

I do get painful breasts a week before my period but it isn't the same kind of pain and my period isn't due. Has anyone experienced anything similar and what was the diagnosis? Should I go back to the doctors about the 3rd lump or wait until after my period like she said.

Thanks for reading.

Hi, hopefully you'll get some more replies from people who have experienced similar and for whom it has all turned out to be fine. I'm in the same position as you (lumps on both sides causing shooting pains) and have been referred for a mammogram. I'm hoping they're just cysts and can be easily dealt with.

How old are you? I believe age is a big factor in whether your GP refers straight away or asks you to monitor first. I'm 45 and was told I'd be offered an appointment within 2 weeks.

Try not to worry meantime, I'm led to believe that lots of women have cysts and in the vast majority of cases they're nothing to worry about.

Thanks for your reply. I'm only 31, which I know is young for the big C but it's still worrying. The breast in question is starting to ache tonight. Not like a pain just like it's telling me it is there. It's very similar to how they feel before a period only much milder.

I'm due to start ivf in 2 weeks which makes it more urgent in my mind. I don't want to start incase it is something serious.

I have had those shooting pains. And aching boobs. And I have lumps.
Have been checked out at a clinic and all clear. Most lumps are nothing. Worth being checked though.

Thank you. I'm glad to hear it was all good for you. Hope to get the same result.

i had a similar pain in my right breast, the upper outside part, and sometimes deeper in the breast. it also occurred in left breast but not as often.

i was in a state with worry and the more i thought about it, the worse my symptoms got. i had a deep ache/burning sensation almost constantly. there was no lump but there was lumpy tissue.

anyway, the breast clinic were amazing and gave me the all clear. its linked to hormones and changes in lumpy tissue around ovulation and in the run up to period.

please dont do what i did and let the thought of the big C take over your life! i was a wreck. it sounds sinister, but it helped to tell myself that if it was C, then i would cope.

I don't like to worry you, but please go back to he Drs as soon as you can. I have a friend who has just had a mastectomy, after symptoms very similar to those you describe. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for replying. Today the lump I initially found is bigger today, and my breast is sore like before a period. Similar stories are helpful, forewarned is forarmed. I will be ringing the doctors as soon as the open on Tuesday.

There are guidelines regarding referral... if your dr had felt what appeared to definitely be a cancer she would have referred you but otherwise if you are premenopausal the recommendation is to wait until after your next period... if lump(s) persist refer at that point for a 2 week wait appointment. Make sure you are booked in for an appointment and go then

I'm only 31 so not premenopausal. She did say any obvious changes, to make another appointment and there has been an obvious change in size. Thanks for your reply.

No not yet, I'm still waiting for an appointment. Still got the lump which is getting bigger but not loads bigger just a bit. The pains are awful, although not often. They feel like I need to breast feed, so full and achy. Also if i roll on it through the night it is like a shooting pain followed by the same kind of pain you would have with a leg cramp. I'm hoping for an emergency appointment tomorrow so will update.

Thank you for asking.

I rang the doctor today, I don't have an appointment until Monday now. So another weekend of worry 😢. I have my first consultation for IVF next Saturday too so I'm worried that this will effect that and I won't be able to do it.

Could you maybe ask to speak to your gp and see if she'll do a referral without seeing you again? After all you have been examined already and if you say the lump has grown she may refer straight away and save you both time.

I couldn't get earlier appointment or referral but I am at the doctors in the morning. One thing I've noticed (totally typical as I approach appointment) is that it has calmed down a bit. The lump is still there and it's still big but the pain has gone. It still hurts if I lean on it but no where near as much. I'm guessing this is a good sign and as much as I'm relieved, I feel like im now wasting the doctors time. I'm still going to go and explain what has been happening anyway. I will up date tomorrow. Thank you all for your support and advise, it really has helped.

Ok so not long to wait then. Is it actually a mammogram or a breast clinic appointment? I suspect you'll have an ultrasound rather than a mammogram due to your age - women under 40 generally have breasts that are too dense for the images on the mammogram to be useful.

Try not to worry. There are loads of threads on here about women waiting for breast clinic appointments for lumps and bumps. Huge majority go home with the all clear. Flowers

The Dr said Mammogram but the appointment letter doesn't specify. Thank you.

Good luck with your mammogram. I'm 41 and found a lump last week. At my hospital appointment today I was told that it was a cyst and then it was confirmed all clear on mammogram. Hope it helps to hear a good news story. My lump was slightly tender to the touch and was quite hard and reasonably large. The consultant drained out a load of fluid from it then and there and as soon as I saw the fluid I breathed a sigh of relief. All the best x

Thank you. That is good news I'm so pleased for you. The thoughts in my head are obviously the worst thoughts you can imagine, I'm trying to be hopeful though. Xx
