Question on 10 yr olds breathing?

My son has never been known to be asthmatic but for the past couple months or so on and off he has had spells of inhaling very quickly with short sharp breaths. Sometimes two short sharp breaths straught after each other. There doesnt seem to be any other symtoms than that really. He will sometimes make funny hummy type noises after he exhales again. Firstly I moaned at him to stop the noises eg whilst watching tv together. But then it became apparent that he was doing it alot and uncontrolably.I was set on taking him to see gp but then didnt want to make to much of it incase it was some sort of habbit best ignored. The symtoms did ease off a little but have started up again. I mainly notice it in the evenings when we are sat quietly together but course he is at school during the day anyway and the teacher has not said anything to me. But then in my experience they dont always notice these things in class. Anyone else had any experiences like this?

Do you think it's more like a vocal tic, like grunting or coughing?

Not much help, I'm afraid.

WELL IT HAS CROSSED MY MIND, YEAH. WHAT WOULD THAT MEAN?

BEEN READING UP ON VOCAL TICS! SOUNDS WORRYING. ANYONE ELSE HAD ANY SIMULAR EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR CHILDREN? SHOULD I TAKE HIM TO GP OR NOT MAKE TO MUCH OF IT?

Is it worth asking in the special needs section? They might be able to offer you useful advice.
