Possible kidney infection?

So 2 weeks today I noticed the usual cystitis symptoms though was very surprised as had not had sex for over a week as partner was away (looks suss I know but thankfully he hasn't questioned it)
Tried to treat it myself for a week but it got so bad, so much blood! Put a sample in and got short course of ABs. Although I told them that when I last had it 3 yrs ago the short course wasn't enough . Took them and felt better but not 100%, rang docs they said sample hadn't grown the bacteria they'd expect from a UTI, so I put another one in which came back normal.
So this brings us to today, last ABs totally worn off now, back to agony and peeing blood but now also horrendous back pain where my kidneys are, agony just to drive.
So doc says he'll give another prescription but not to take it til results back (it'll be 3 days and I'm in agony!!!) had to finally take sick leave for it after holding out the fortnight.
Should I just go to a&e or walk In centre? Neither of which I have ever used but I'm in so much pain and worried this is very serious.

Oh my goodness, if you're peeing blood and have kidney pain you most definitely need to get that seen to immediately. Untreated kidney infections can be very serious, I'm not sure why your GP thinks it's ok to wait three days! If you tell the docs there what's been going on with your previous failed treatment they might be able to run some more tests to clarify whether it is actually an infection. But please go as soon as you can! X

I know they just don't seem to be taking it seriously . I've been 3 times in a week. I've told them everything but they don't seem worried .

Did you have the kidney pain when you last saw them? I'm obviously no doctor so there could well be good reason they're telling you to wait until test results (maybe you need a stronger or more specific antibiotic) but really, you're suffering. Passing blood and kidney pain isn't something you want to hang about with. Do you have someone who could take you to a&e or walk-in?Even if they send you home again I think it's worth it. X

At the very least I'd call 111, though I think A&E would be a better bet.

Hope you get sorted soon!

When I went today I told them about the kidney pain but was still just given another short course of ABs , but told not to take them til test results come back ( started taking them anyway because I do not want to end up on a drip in hospital which is the way it was heading)
Fancy dangling antibiotics in front of me when I'm suffering but telling me not to take them .
I will see how I feel tomorrow

If you're not any better tomorrow, or you get worse tonight, go to A&E. I had the same symptoms after a suspected UTI (I tried to deal with it myself by drinking extra water etc.) - extreme pain in the kidney area and blood in my urine, and the doctor sent me straight to the hospital for a CT scan, which showed my lymph nodes were so swollen they thought I had a tumour. Point is, the GP thought this was not something that could wait for blood or urine test results.

I used to have recurrent cystitis and my samples never showed anything. Also what antibiotics are you on? You need some hardcore ones asap. I can't believe your gp said that. In 3 days you'll be in hospital. When my infections came back i was given stronger ones for ten days. All good. Trimoprothen or whatever it's called is no use on me. I would seek help tonight.

Keep drinking plenty, OP. Is your pee dark or light? Any temperature, headache, sickness? Did your GP order any blood tests btw?

Call 111 for a telephone assessment. I am inclined to think you were right to start the next set of ABs as the condition was worsening.

I think in the past when I've had it the tests didn't come back with much either.
The docs have only asked for urine samples, I think they are taking it seriously due to the fact the first 2 didn't really show anything . Even though the first one was the colour of pink grapefruit juice! It now looks like pineapple juice though I've had blood in it again today
Last week I got 3 days worth of Nitrofurantoin, today I got another 3 day course , something beginning with T .

3 day courses? Do they really give such short courses for UTIs? I've never had shorter than a 7 day course.

I think maybe I haven't been forceful enough, I've just registered at this doctors and I'm not good at making demands and if I ever do get my knickers in a twist in comes out aggressive and rude. Remember getting a mouthful from a former gp after I snapped at him when I'd a previous uti which got v bad and also wasn't treated properly . Didn't have the kidney pains that time though.

I find if Nitro doesn't work than Trimethroprim does. Also have never heard of a 3 day course for a UTI; sounds like a recipe for a full on return if not a kidney infection.

Are your attacks triggered by sex? Picking up your original post. I have had this for 12 years now. A consultant recommended taking one pill of trimethroprim after sex as a preventative measure. It did work for a while but now seems to have lost efficacy. I have had these antibiotics on repeat prescription for about 10 years. It might be worth trying when you can have a sensible conversation with a doctor.

Every other time I've had it had been after sex but not this time which puzzled me

I used to have fairly frequent UTIs but haven't had any in a long time now - only changes I've made have been always making sure to wee after sex! And switching from tampons to a mooncup. Possibly helpful to you for the future...

I had a kidney infection after two short 3 day courses of trimethoprim. I ended up in hospital for 4 days on IV antibiotics.

Definitely try and get a longer course of antibiotics ASAP.

You have my sympathies I felt horrendous.

My daughter has had lots of UTIs and several of her antibiotic courses were 3 days long, so it's not unusual.

Natsku I have often wondered if tampons have something to do with it as I tend to get UTIs right at the end of a period . Thought I was doing really well not having one for over 3 years .

And ps. yes I would go to A&E.

DD did end up in hospital after one UTI that went to her kidneys. Symptoms were back pain (flanks), fever and stinging urine.

Report
Natsku · 06/03/2017 21:39

Tampons definitely affected yeast infections for me (would always get one after my period) so not surprised if they triggered UTIs too. But if its been 3 years since the last one then I doubt its to do with periods or sex (unless you haven't had sex in 3 years)

NotMoreFootball · 06/03/2017 21:40

Please go to A&E, I had the same symptoms, the doctors suspected a kidney infection and sent me for a CAT scan which showed it was actually my appendix had ruptured. To me, the pain had felt like it was in my kidneys so you need to get checked out!

How are you?

A three day course should do it.

I was a frequent sufferer, it turned out to be hormonal contraceptives. I was intolerant.

If your 3 days isn't doing the job then it needs further investigation. Definitely sounds like a kidney infection. You have a fever too?

Some ABs are for lower tract infections only, you may need something different for kidneys. I can't believe they haven't considered this. Kidney infections can get out of hand very quickly! And why wait 3 days, they've got the sample haven't they?

I'd take them but that's me.

Feel better soon Flowers

Hi , so after all that panic I woke up this morning feeling fine. Like literally no pain , after taking 2 antibiotics . Have gradually gone downhill throughout the day but no where near as bad as yday . Seems I got those ABs just in time . So maybe no kidney infection.
I'm still not 100% and I'm now into the third week of this . It's amazing how it comes and goes but that will be the ABs masking it but not clearing it.
