Reduced kidney function

My mum has been having sharp stomach pains and a bout of sickness and diahorhea (sp???). She's a bit better now but her GP took some tests and everything came back clear apart from kidney function which was only 54%. Gp has said she should have the test again in 2 weeks to see if it's just an after effect of the tummy bug. I'm am so worried about her - she's 76 next month and so far has been hale and hearty although getting a little frailer inevitable. The GP mentioned dialysis and I just can't see her coping with that regularly - it would be an 80 mile round trip.

Mum really didn't want to talk about it and my dad would avoid the subject like te plague. Anyone know anything about this - how likely is it to be nothing at all? I know it's a difficult question but I am so worried.

I have a lot of knowledge on dialysis etc as I have had 2 transplants.Various things can affect your kidney function esp sickness and diarrhoea. If you are dehydrated the levels of toxins in the blood seem higher as they are more concentrated.I would suggest she really rests as this bug may have really taken it out of her and start drinking lots of water so she is well hydrated when she has the next test and they get an accurate read.

Thanks Noddy. Sorry to hear that you had such a hard time. Are you well now? TBH there's no problem with her resting as she's completely exhausted atm. I'll pass on the advice to her.

Hi,

Mum had her new tests and she still has a problem. Kidney function has improved but not enough apparently to be out of the woods. She isn' being put on dialysys but is still being monitored and is being given tablets to reduce blood pressure. Anyone (Noddy?) know why and will things improve more. She's worn out atm and I'm so worried about her.

Thanks
