I've tried them, and found they don't stay on that well.

drinking beer out of bottles gives me coldsores avoid that and i don't get them

Ask your doctor to precribe Zovarax anti viral tablets you take a course and it prevents attacks of cold sores for around a year and should you still get one they are very small and go really quick.

A firnd tol me today that using the witchhazel stick on her starting coldsore made it go away immediatly. She said it stung a lot, but that she could immediatly feel the swelling going down.

I'm going to get one and try it next time I feel one coming on. I don't find that zovirax works for me in the way it used to

The cream doesn't do it for me either but since taking the course of tablets I haven't had any.

I spend a bloody fortune on zovirax. Will try getting my doctor to prescribe the tablets.

I find that the cream tends to "burn" the skin immediately below the lip/coldsore, and I end up with an unsightly scab long after the coldsore has gone.

I've got one at the moment and when I eat it cracks open and bleeds. Awful.

Dh never gets the damn things.

Trillium - I also have the same problem with 'burnt' skin - didn't realise it was due to the cream.

I find I only get coldsores if I'm a bit run down, like after giving birth to DD2 when I had a very low haemoglobin level.

That's timely - my Mum was looking at these in Boots today and was reluctant to spend £7 on something that might not be any good. I've sent off for a sample for her. I'll also mention the Zovirax tablets to her.

And witch hazel, thanks mb. My Mum gets a lot of coldsores - she gets them when it's sunny if she doesn't use sunblock on her lips, and when she's run down.

My mil gets coldsores every time she goes on holiday - maybe I'll buy her lip sunblock (don't think she uses any suncream, a totally different generation to us).

From being a child I would regularly get coldsores, maybe 2/3 a year. However since having DS1 I have never had one, not even a tingle.

Any ideas why not?

Pure coincidence that we were discussing it in school today. I have a whopper of a cs atm, and the friend told me that she had found it very useful. Given that my cs is now totaly 'out' I'm not brave enough to use the witch hazel on an open sore

But will try it when I feel the next one breaking out.

Warning, she did say that it stung, but that it immediatly started to become less inflamed
