Ingrown toe nails

Hi all,

I've suddenly started getting bad ingrown toenails, never suffered before and always keep my nails trimmed (not too short) and polished! My boyfriend is telling me I'll need surgery (he's never had one) I'm just stressing out about it! My little toe nail is sooo manky and now my big ones too! I've tried to cut my nail as I always do and it's just torn all the way down the side where the ingrown part is! I've attached pics... Just asking if anyone has suffered similar and what you did?
