Came down with what I thought was an awful UTI on 30th December. Came on very suddenly. No pain or stinging, but I was having to go every 10 minutes and had a constant urge to pass urine, even straight after going.

Got a 3-day course of Trimeprothim which didn't seem to help much. Symptoms eased slightly after a day, then came back again and I'm still struggling now.

It has been so frustrating, so this morning I rang 111 and was told to go to my nearest walk-in centre. They did tests on a urine sample that came back with nothing apart from a slightly higher than normal amount of ketones.

They advised me to keep drinking lots of water and gave me a potassium citrate mixture to drink 3 times a day, but that was it. I'm STILL going to the loo constantly and can't get rid of the urge to keep going. Sounds silly but I had a cry before, it's just so tiring Sad

Any ideas/advice?

Ok I'm no doctor but I'm someone that suffers from UTI's about 6 times a year!

First of all - when did you give your urine sample in - how many days after you finished the antibiotics because mine always came back negative until I waited around a week after I had finished the course and 3 days doesn't work for me I always have to have 5 days otherwise it comes back with a vengeance, and sometimes I have to switch to another antibiotic after trimethoprim course.

Second of all, do you have any other symptoms at all other than urge to go all the time? Any pain/burning/stinging/discomfort/pressure?

If there were high ketones then unless you have been quite dehydrated and not eating properly I'd probably ask for a diabetes test at your GP tbh or at least a blood sugar check and repeat urine dip as glucose and ketones in urine are a symptom of diabetes. I know yours just had ketones but it might be worth a check as a symptom of diabetes is increased need to pass urine.

It's also worth asking your GP to send a sample of your urine off for cultures as my local area in particular about 80% of uti's are trimethoprim resistant now so the microbiologist for our area has changed our first line antibiotic (although this info hasn't managed to register with some GP's particularly at walk in centres as they often locum from other areas where Trimethoprim is a first line antibiotic)

Ahousemadeofcheese - I have constant pressure around my bladder, but no pain/stinging when I go. I finished the antibiotics on the 1st and did my urine sample this morning.

cx5221 - I was worried about diabetes, did some googling and a lot of the symptoms match up to me Confused although I'm only 25 and not overweight, I probably don't have the healthiest diet. I am tempted to go back and ask for further tests though as this is becoming unbearable Sad

I'd second getting a blood sugar check to rule out diabetes, but sounds unlikely.

Any chance you could be constipated? If you are then it could be a lump of poo pressing on your bladder making you feel like you need to go when your bladders actually empty? Definately go back to the gp and if they can't help ask for further investigation.
