Hello all

I went to the dentist with toothache on monday and was told i had an abscess and was prescribed amoxicillin 500mg 3 times a day for 5 days.

Tuesday morning i woke up with a big swelling on my gum. A few hours later it burst.

Today (wednesday) my gum has swelled up a bit where it burst and was just wondering if this is normal. I have no pain in the tooth and the gum is sore. I have also been rinsing my mouth with warm salt water.

Im back at the dentist 17/1/17 to have thr tooth extracted.

Many thanks

I found corsodyl mouthwash really helped with infection & swelling. It pretty much cleared my abscess.

Sounds like abscess is starting to improve after 48 hrs on antibiotics. Good!
Carry on with the hot salt mouth rinses frequently throughout the day. Aim for at least 6 mugs of HSMW thro' the day.
Sleep with head elevated slightly, add another pillow.
Wrapped ice pack applied to the outer facial swelling 3 times daily for no longer than 60 secs.
If it gets painful, alternate ibuprofen with paracetamol every 3& half hours. Ibuprofen only if no asthma or stomach issues etc etc.
Good to hear you will having the offending tooth out very soon, as you have only a short window period after antibiotics prescribed before abscess will probably blow back. Hope this helps!

Best thing you can do is saltwater mouthwash. Dental consultant after surgery on a wisdom tooth told me to have it as hot as you can bear it, as this will have more effect.

Corsodyll is ok, but very very hot salt water is better according to the pros.

Thank you for the replies.

I cant take ibruprofen due to asthma.

I cant wait to have the tooth out.

My concern at the moment is that the gum has swollen ahain. Is this normal after it has already burst?

Yes, dental abscesses can burst & then re-fill & so on etc. Vicious circle etc.
It'll probably remain 'chronically' as opposed to 'acutely' infected, until you have the tooth extracted. In an ideal world you'd have the tooth extracted as soon as antibiotics completed, but probably lack of earlier appointments at this time of year at your dental practice prevent this?
Practical tip: When you are hot salty mouthwashing, try to externally manipulate the swelling simultaneously to aid pus drainage.
If the pus swelling is localised and is very tense, your dentist can incise and drain using a freezing spray or local anaesthesia. These type of swellings are usually intensely painful though.
HTH !

Yes the earliest appointment is the 17/1/17 but i might phone next week to see if there is any cancellations.

It has drained a bit and tge pressure has faded along with the ear ache.

I have no pain from the tooth anymore just the soreness and the pressure when the gum swells along woth tooth sensitivity.

Thank you for the advise really has put my mind at rest :)

Just keep rinsing it out, as often and as hot as you can

Hello all

Just an update.
Went to dentist today and was prescribed more amoxicillin for another 5 days.

Fingers crossed it will settle down soon. Everytime my gum swells up its not as big as the last time so im hoping the gunk in there is nearly all gone.

Thanks to everyone who replied and merry xmas to everyone x
