Losing blood

I'm 5 weeks postpartum and my bleeding had all but stopped. So finally sleeping in the buff again, did a naked run downstairs to go and grab the baby a bottle and was stood waiting when I felt like I was suddenly wetting myself. Cursed myself for not doing my pelvic floors enough however when I looked down there was blood running down the insides of my legs. Bright red and lots of it. Grabbed a massive wad of kitchen towel but had soaked through it in seconds. All over the kitchen floor (and cat who was rubbing against my legs like a total creep) got upstairs and sat on the loo and had quite a trickle like the end of a wee (but blood obviously) for a further 30 seconds-1min, also passing some considerable clots. Then stopped as suddenly as it had started. I've actually felt woozy today from the sheer amount of blood loss this morning.
Anyone thoughts?!

You need to have this investigated ASAP. Call 111 for advice now, if you can.

Possibly retained placenta? Happened to a relative.

Did they give you a number to call in case of any issues? Call that. If no number call the ward or 111.

I suspect the "run" downstairs has cause it but like the others I think you need to get it checked out. Much better safe than sorry!!

Well, actually OH's relative, but more of less the same thing. Needed a scan and an op to remove the rest of the placenta so it definitely needs checking ASAP.

I had this after only a couple of weeks. Blood pressure hit the floor too. Mine was just a pocket of blood left over. It was one "evacuation" and no more. They took me in for observation for a few hours but nothing else happened. I rang 111.

Perfectly normal. Blood had pooled in uterus as lying down. You jumped up,and ran which pumped it all out in a rush. If not continuing, not decidedly smelly and you are not ill don't worry.

I'd get it checked out, it's probably just the sudden activity but if the clots were sizeable I'd want it checked. My bleed I stopped and restarted when I did too much after dd2 but better safe than sorry, I had a PPH and it was scary.

Yeah I figured my jog down the stairs had done it. However I did have quite an infection after she was born so I think I may just ring the GP in the morning to be on the safe side. It really was an awful lot and I do tend to ignore these things and think I'm fine. Then suddenly I'm really poorly and wonder why. Idiotic really

Worth ringing 111 tonight to check? I'm not sure I'd sleep well until I'd checked it out but that's me.

Youre probably right Christmas but I really don't want to drag my LO out in the cold if they tell me to go in. If I start up again I will most definitely get it checked but it's waited 12 hours, it'll wait 12 more. Thank you for your speedy replies

Take care. It's better to go to A&E and embarrass yourself by 'wasting their time' than it is to allow a condition to get worse and worse. Don't wait till it's at crisis point!

My trouble is that I work in A&E so I would be absolutely mortified if I had to go in. I'm aware of how stupid that sounds but I avoid it at all costs unless I'm working! I rang the GP this morning who called me straight in and arranged a scan for tomorrow. The bleeding along with a couple of other weird and wonderful symptoms made suspect I have some retained products/something weird going on. So we shall see I suppose! Thanks again all

Got anyone to stay with you in case you need an ambulance called? I know it's unlikely but hoping you are t on your own tonight til you've got the all clear.

I had similar and the HV just rolled her eyes and said it was normal even though I was wearing a huge mattress of a sanitary pad at the time! I was in a lift at the time,soaked my skirt, shoes and just about everything else too. That can't have been normal, surely?

I'd at least ring for advice OP.

I hate it when health professionals become so bloody dismissive of people. The moment I feel like I want to roll my eyes at someone when they tell me they are poorly I am quitting my job and running away to the circus

No,15 years ago and I was absolutely fine but these days I think I'd get it checked.

Had a scan this morning. I have retained products that need to come out. Fairly unusual to bleed so heavily when you've all but stopped apparently.
My options are a) leave it but high risk of infection as it's been there so long, b) a pessary similar to an induction to soften the neck of the womb (I would rather eat my own face than have that pessary again) c) a clear out but only under local which means you have to have local anaesthetic injected into the neck of your womb. Had this when I lost my first baby at 12 weeks and it was horrendous. I dislike all of these options. Help?

ah I'm so sorry to hear about these awfully bad options. I've had c) where they manually retrieved the retained products - was no picnic at all but you've probably got to do b or c - so sorry you're going through this. a) could make you really ill, i wouldn't go for a. For b), will the pessary result in you expelling retained products 'naturally', that might be my preferred option but is there a risk you'll haemorrage on your own at home whilst doing b)? In which case, I'd go for c)...

can they give you an epidural whilst they do it? I had an extra epidural when they did mine and that helped.
