just this really. Its so painful I had to come in from work early as I can barely walk.
does anyone know what causes this? and how I can avoid it?
its happened once before in the summer. Muscles are all stiff and improve a bit with rest, heat and ibuprofen, but back the next day.

I'd ice it rather than heat it as you want the inflammation to go down.
Mine does this every so often. I see a chiropractor who uses lasers on my muscles.
What do you sleep on? How do you sleep?

thanks, i am going to try the cold method today. I've taken a day off. I sleep on a fairly soft mattress thats ancient. I know it needs replacing but havent put the two together. I generally sleep on one side foetal.

This is your back warning you to stop doing something (could just be the mattress). It should get better in a few days but might come back if you don't heed the warning. Ice, paracetamol and ibuprofen should all help too. I am post surgery for slipped disc so I listen when I get back trouble (usually means I have been lazy and not exercised enough). Bed shopping for you when you feel better!

Try not to be still for too long. While it is painful and stiff to move about, get up as often as you can. Stand as straight as you can, it pulls the muscles into place and reduces the spasm. If it is very painful to get up, press your fingertips firmly into the sore/tight muscle as you stand, you'll find you stand easier.

Thanks for replying. I am moving around lightly at home and sitting for short periods. I don't know if I can go back to work tomorrow though. Its super boring.

I know I need to sort something seriously out with the mattress. I've just missed The black weekend!

I am waiting for a call from the GP who will give me permission to access physio via my work insurance. I need to strengthen my lower back/core as I have a long back.

Sounds good .. physio will really help and then you have to keep doing the exercises. Black Friday is a con ... there will still be bargains around. Wouldn't risk work myself but don't know your circumstances obviously. Good luck!
