I learnt today that my beautiful friend is dying and only has a year to live. She has two lovely kids, 6 and 4. I really don't know what to say or do to help her. She is an amazing courageous lady. How do you ask someone how they are knowing that they aren't bloody ok and their world has been torn apart. I just feel so useless and don't know what to say. I have told her I will be there for her with anything she wants. But they seem like pointless words. I'm not looking for answers as what can you say. It just helps to share this.

Oh that is just awful.

Fwiw, I don't think your words are pointless - and I'm sure she will be glad of you being there for her in the coming months. Just being there to listen, and help out with practical things - I'm sure that knowing that you will be around will reassure her.

You must feel so sad and shocked - be kind to yourself too.

How very sad.
Tbh, I would think it's not so much what you say to her, but that you are there fore her and that you will listen to her.
How are you is indeed an empty phrase, I suppose...but how are you feeling today might be more apt...
Don't offer to help her out, just do it...iykwim.

That's awful. Really really shit. I went through a similar thing recently. I gave my friend some massages and talked to him about life after death. stuff we'd never talked about before. His wife had died a few years earlier of motor neurone disease so it was a big shit time. He had cancer. Cry with your friend and tell her you love her and maybe give her a nice foot massage in some beautiful oil of rose or something. If she's open minded maybe you could watch 6th sense with Colin Fry that helped my friend a lot. Also books by Brian Weiss are helpful maybe you could read a bit to her?
Lots of love to you xxxx
