what to do about dh's blood clot?

Dh had a vasectomy four weeks ago. He was fine after a few days and went back to work.

Two days later he was in loads of pain and has a swelling in his testicle.
Has seen various GPs now and they agree it's a blood clot caused when the surgeon cut a blood vessel doing the op (surgeon admits this and said he popped a stitch in it)

Everyone keeps telling him to lie down and rest and it will go away.
But a month on its bigger than ever (small orange size now large orange)
He can barely walk, he is on max painkillers dosage but still really really sore.

He is never one to stay off work but has been off for a month now as his job is really physical. Plus he couldn't walk/drive to get there.

He feels like he is being fobbed off. Both the surgeon who did the op and the surgical person he saw at the hospital a week ago have said it will go away.

But it isn't. It's worse and more painful than ever. He keeps getting feverish at night, sweats, then cold too but this is maybe due to all the painkillers.

What do we do?!

I am not medically trained, but I would say

  • measure it at the same time every day for the next couple of days and if it's worsening then go back again to the GP.

  • watch out for signs of infection (redness, heat, him having a temperature) and make sure he is peeing plenty. Any worries call the GP/111

It's definitely bigger than it was two days ago and it's hard now.

You can see it's much bigger just by looking. It's really red too.

Poor man

Do they realise he has sweats and is feverish? This is suggestive of infection I think. I think she should go to GP and explain.

I'm only a community nurse but if I had a patient with a chronic haematoma or clot of blood ..its a prime place for infection to start . Don't normally deal with scrotums mind Grin
I think it may have to be surgically removed eventually ..as he's at risk of sepsis . They probably think the blood will eventually reabsorb ..but your description sounds like thats not happening

he ..sorry

Thank you so much. This is what I worry about too, infection or sepsis.

We will go back tomorrow and explain about the fever etc.

It's hard as I don't know anything about scrotums either! So I don't really know what's in there to begin with!!

Yes everyone has said it will reabsorb but that's definitely not happening.

If it needs to be removed is that a difficult op? We are supposed to fly to Spain on holiday in four weeks time. I can't see that happening at this rate....!

Oh I'm not sure about that..shouldn't think it is . I haven't worked in surgical area for yrs ,so hopefully your GP can help there ..or someone more knowledgable will come along.

Saw doc at 9am and we are in hospital now waiting for a scan.

Consultant seemed to think antibiotics would suffice but will wait to see results of scan.

They can't leave him like this surely. The thing is now the size of a large orange and he is on morphine

He has had a scan and it's a big infected abcess.
Why on earth they didn't scan him two weeks ago is beyond me. I'm so cross he has been fobbed off for nearly a month now.

Waiting on consultant now to see what can be done. The doc who scanned him said it needed to be drained.

He is on IV antibiotics now. And morphine which is quite amusing. He has picked out a new husband for me if he doesn't make it....! Grin

Thank god they've finally got proof ! Yes it probably will need draining .
ON the road to recovery though..finally.

His temp spiked again despite the IV atbx so they took him into theatre at 6.30 to see what could be drained/taken out.

So I am sitting in the day room waiting for him to come back

The consultant said he may lose a testicle but dh didn't really care just wanted it done.

So hopefully this is him finally getting better - poor man has been so unwell today.

Just home from hospital and into bed - a very long day for poor dh.

He came back from theatre about two hours later. Nobody was there to tell me what's been done but I assume it's been drained. I will find out more tomorrow.

He was very sleepy but nice and cool which was good after having such a high temp.

He had a bit of water and asked for some food which I left for when he wakes. He was on oxygen too.

DC are with my mum she will drop them off here in the morning for school. It's a very quiet house. Funny how you long for peace and then hate it when you finally get it.

Thanks for all the well wishes and to ggirl a big Flowers
