Liver related question

Hello all

DMIL had two liver function tests recently and the ALT has come back as 400. She was told the normal is a maximum of 40.

She has been referred for a scan. Any ideas what we could be looking at?

Tia

ALT usually indicates changes in the liver though is not specific to what type of change. Really any possible change. If there are other blood results such as bile acids and haematology they might hint at the possible cause, but ALT alone does not.
I say usually as certain drugs can increase it and it can sometimes be increased by having intramuscular injections.

ALT can go up with medication, infection etc. Why were the tests done? Is she unwell? What symptoms?
Do you have any other results - GGT, Albumin, clotting...

Thanks for your replies.

She had a bile duct test and that came back ok.

The reason for the liver test was for a pre op check as she was supposed to be having a polyp removed from her uterus. The op was cancelled when the doctor saw her results and ordered the ct scan and asked dmil if she felt unwell.

She does feel unwell, she had a seizure in January, had atrial fibrillation, got a sore lower back and a bad tummy. They were going to remove the polyp for a biopsy but now seem more concerned about her liver.

She is furious as been waiting for the op since last year.
